London climate change protest

Demonstrators gather during a climate protest in London's Parliament Square on Monday

Extinction Rebellion have organised a nationwide week of action, they are calling for a full-scale Rebellion to demand decisive action from governments on climate change and ecological collapse.

Today the Extinction Rebellion movement took their protests to London and across the world.

As well as bringing traffic to a standstill at Marble Arch, Parliament Square, Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus and Waterloo Bridge, protestors armed with banners "swarmed" rush hour traffic to prevent vehicles moving for seven minute intervals. Police arrested 85 activists that day and organizers say they expect further arrests on Monday.

At Waterloo Bridge, protesters blocked the crossing over the Thames and turned it into an impromptu garden bridge, with people bringing trees, flowers and setting up a miniature skate park and stage.

Savannah, a protester for Extinction Rebellion, defended the protests and said the group want to start important conversations.

At least, Waterloo Bridge was unwittingly pedestrianised.

Police said that as of 6am there had been 113 arrests in total in connection with the demonstrations. "What's fantastic about this is for 30 years you have just had that closing up of public space - "you can't do this, you can't do that, you've got to finish then". "We are here tonight to declare that we do not wish to be at war".

"We respect the right of everyone to express their point of view, we only ask that they do so with their safety and the safety of others in mind", a Shell spokeswoman said by email.

These are central London landmarks protesters are targeting as part of efforts to demand the Government declares a climate emergency.

The order restricted protesters to the area around Marble Arch.

The campaign group said that "over 100 courageous rebels" had been arrested, some willingly.

Scotland Yard said they have "appropriate policing plans" in place for the demonstrations and that officers will be used from across the force "to support the public order operation during the coming weeks".
