Measles Cases in US Reach Second-Highest Level Since 2000

Measles Why not vaccinating your kids can be deadly

Higher rates of the preventable but contagious disease have been recorded in all regions, the United Nations agency said in a statement, appealing for better vaccination coverage. Yet last week, 90 new cases were reported by the Centers for Disease Control. "Many countries are in the midst of sizeable measles outbreaks, with all regions of the world experiencing sustained rises in cases", WHO further said.

The number of measles cases in the US is now at the second-highest level since measles was eliminated in the country in 2000, according to a report released Monday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). By the end of the year, the number of measles cases in the USA could come close to the tally reported 25 years ago in 1994: 963 cases.

Currently, the 2019 tally is the highest since an outbreak in 2014 that saw 667 cases.

For the third week in a row, US health officials have added dozens of new reports to the year's list of confirmed measles cases, bringing the total to 555 - already the highest number in the past five years. The virus can be prevented with the MMR vaccine, which also protects against mumps (a viral infection that affects the salivary glands) and rubella (also a viral infection that is identified by its distinctive red rash).

Health officials on Monday said 555 measles cases have been confirmed so far this year, up from 465 as of a week ago.

In 2000, measles was largely eradicated, having not been continually transmitted for a period of more than 12 months thanks to a highly effective vaccination program in the United States.

Man attacked and killed by giant cassowary bird after falling over
They can be up to 2 meters (6ft) tall and weigh up to 60kg (130lb), with black body feathers and bright blue heads and necks. He said first responders got a call on Friday morning and rushed the man to a hospital for trauma care but he later died.

Of those, 273 were reported this year, including 44 cases since last week, when New York City officials declared a public health emergency and ordered mandatory measles vaccinations to halt the outbreak concentrated among ultra-Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn.

"By the time you finish reading this, we estimate that at least 40 people - majority children - will be infected by this fast-moving, life-threatening disease", Henrietta Fore, executive director of UNICEF and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, wrote in an opinion piece Monday on CNN. His research was found to be based on fraudulent data, the study was retracted, and the doctor lost his medical license.

Before the first measles vaccine became available in 1963, the disease killed hundreds of people and hospitalized 48,000 each year, according to the CDC. "That's been proven. There is no association whatsoever between the measles vaccine and autism".

Measles can be an extremely serious disease. For every 1,000 children who get the disease, the CDC estimated one or two will die from it.

Measles isn't just rising in the United States.

"We eliminated measles from this country in 2000, and". The Ukraine has recorded about 37,000 cases this year.
