What are Sudanese protesters demanding?

Sudanese demonstrators gather near the military

Sudanese protesters moved to block an attempt on Monday to break up a sit-in outside the Defence Ministry, where demonstrators have been pushing for a quick transition to civilian rule after President Omar al-Bashir was ousted, a Reuters witness said.

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) has threatened to suspend Sudan in the wake of last week's coup, calling on the military to hand over power to a transitional civilian-led political authority.

Protesters who are holding a sit-in which is entering is second week, have also been assured of security by the military.

The military council met political parties on Sunday and urged them to agree on an "independent figure" to be prime minister, an AFP correspondent at the meeting said.

An immediate transfer of power to a transitional civilian government to govern for a four-year term, followed by elections.

"We urge Sudan's new leadership to take the steps necessary to build domestic and global support to help resolve Sudan's many pressing challenges", it said.

"We are adhering to our commitment to the coalition, and our forces will remain until the coalition fulfils its goals", Hemedti said.

The foreign ministry urged the global community to back the military council "to achieve the Sudanese goal of democratic transition".

The council chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan is "committed to having a complete civilian government and the role of the council will be to maintain the sovereignty of the country", it added.

On Saturday evening, the new military ruler named NISS deputy head Jalaluddin Sheikh to the council, with Himeidti as its deputy head.

"Afterwards, the SPA ... will be a guardian of democracy".

Some drummed and waved national flags as they mingled in the street, while others took shelter from the sun under parasols and makeshift tents.

The protest outside the compound, which also includes the intelligence headquarters and the presidential residence, began on 6 April, after more than three months of protests triggered by a deepening economic crisis.

The army also established a military council to run the country for a transitional period of two years.

There has been no mention of the reasons why they were picked up and who exactly had been arrested.

The umbrella organisation, which spearheaded the months of protests that precipitated al-Bashir's removal, also demanded the sacking of Sudan's prosecutor general and judiciary head, as well as the disbanding of the former president's National Congress Party (NCP).

Bashir, his former interior minister Abdelrahim Mohamed Hussein, and Ahmed Haroun, the former head of the ruling party, will be charged with corruption and the death of protesters, two sources with direct knowledge of events told CNN.

Himeidti is a field commander for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) counter-insurgency unit, which rights groups have accused of abuses in the war-torn Darfur region.

The deputy leader of Sudan's ruling military council, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daqlo, met in Khartoum on Sunday with USA charge d'affaires Steven Koutsis.
