Laid off GM Lordstown workers react to Workhorse announcement

President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday GM had sold the plant to electric truck manufacturer Workhorse. (David Dermer Special

"The move has the potential to bring significant production and electric vehicle assembly jobs to the plant".

"This potential agreement creates a positive outcome for all parties involved and will help solidify the leadership of Workhorse's role in the EV community,".

"We remain committed to growing manufacturing jobs in the USA, including in OH, and we see this development as a potential win-win for everyone", said Mary Barra, GM chairman and CEO.

The governor said GM CEO Mary Barra told him that her company and Workhorse have reached an agreement to sell the plant, pending approval from the United Auto Workers. Union workers were livid that they agreed to make $118 million a year in annual concessions to save the plant in mid 2017, only to have the company effectively threaten to close it down a year and a half later. A stamping plant in Parma, near Cleveland, will see expanded production and new laser welding technology, the company said. Lordstown had been pulled into the 2020 presidential campaign as Trump has pressured companies to add jobs in the U.S. OH is key to Trump's re-election campaign, and he has attacked GM for plans to close the plant as part of a larger restructuring effort.

"The first vehicle we would plan to build if we were to purchase the Lordstown Complex would be a commercial electric pickup, blending Workhorse's technology with Lordstown's manufacturing expertise", Mr. Hughes said.

What they all missed is I think what this factory might be for ... and it seems while this information was news just yesterday, no one made the link.

GM's operations at the plant ceased back in March of this year, resulting in the loss of about 1,700 hourly jobs. But Husted said while electric vehicle manufacturers such as Workhorse and Tesla have "had a hard time making it in a market-based system", things would be better for Workhorse if it gets a "reliable customer" in the Postal Service.

HBO says 'Game of Thrones' coffee cup was a 'mistake'
Neither HBO nor Starbucks spokespeople immediately returned a request for comment about the missing coffee cup. Starbucks tweeted , "TBH we're surprised she didn't order a Dragon Drink ".

GM closed the Lordstown plant in March, laying off 1,400 workers.

Terry Dittes, the UAW's national vice president, said in a prepared statement that the company should still assign a new product to Lordstown and keep the plant open.

Manufacturing investments in OH totaling approximately $700 million will help expand GM's operations in Toledo, Parma and Moraine and create approximately 450 new manufacturing jobs. It also reported $2.8 million in cash and short-term investments.

President Donald Trump announced the deal with a company named Workhorse on Twitter Wednesday morning.

The decisions came after GM faced months of criticism over its plan announced in November to close five North American plants and cut 15,000 jobs. Trump said in his tweet.

But the remainder of the 2,600 workers at the plant in Oshawa, near Toronto, are still scheduled to be laid off.
