Dyson patents hint at design of its electric crossover

Dyson electric car patent images- side profile

A number of patents for new cars have been issued, although the drawings "don't reveal what the vehicle will really look like or what it will do", Sir James said, as he called on staff to keep key details secret.

The patent filings are the first clue to what the "radically different" auto pledged by British inventor Sir James Dyson might look like.

Dyson has filed new patents on what its upcoming electric auto could like - showing the model to be a larger vehicle. The aim is the vehicle is suitable for both "city and rough terrain".

Despite the high ground clearance, the vehicle's overall height would be lower than most SUVs and a larger, thinner battery pack than rivals would help give more space inside. The patents were filed 18 months ago but only published this week.

The British engineering firm - traditionally known for its powerful vacuum cleaners - is quick to stress that the designs are not reflective of what the production auto will look like, although the large layout, high ride height and large allow wheels point towards the model being a big SUV, such is the trend of other manufacturers launching their first EVs.

The cars are now expected to launch in 2021, a year behind the original date. The vehicle would build on Dyson technology used in its other products, such as its own motor and battery types.

What was revealed by Sir James is that advances in aerodynamics, efficiency and vehicle architecture of the auto have been made.

The firm, most famous for its vacuum and hairdryers, announced it was working on an electric vehicle in September 2017, details of which have been scarce besides confirmation late previous year it will be manufactured in Singapore ahead of its 2021 launch.

However, Dyson maintains that the vehicle is a British project, with the design, engineering and testing of prototypes being carried out in its Wiltshire base, the ex-military Hullavington airfield where hangars have been converted to house the project.

The forthcoming electric vehicle's layout allows for very good approach, breakover and departure angles even by Land Rover standards, the report says, although there has been no indication that Dyson intends to build an off-roader.

In a letter to staff Dyson said the vehicle will contain "fundamentally new technologies and make some inventive leaps".

"To be clear, at this stage we are not talking about the vehicle we are actually developing, people will have to wait a while longer to see the details", Sir James concluded.
