She co-stars with American Horror Story's Finn Wittrock as Mickey Deans (Garland's fifth husband) as well as Michael Gambon in the role of her manager, Bernard Delfton. Written by Tom Edge and starring Renée Zellweger as the iconic performer, Judy will chronicle the final year of Garland's life, where she embarks on a new tour and a new romance while fighting an exhaustion that has long plagued her as someone who worked nonstop since she was practically a baby. "#JudyTheFilm, in cinemas October", the caption reads.

In the trailer, Zellweger's Garland walks the yellow brick road, and is shown in behind-the-scenes dressing-room moments. The film is set months before Judy's untimely death in London and follows the drama, the music, the career and the woman from Oz to London. The film will tell the story of Garland's life, and will open in London during her sell-out run of concerts.

Director Rupert Goold said in a press statement that he cast Zellweger for her talent, sense of humor, and the musical ability she showcased in 2002's Chicago.

Judy is based on the Peter Quilter play End of the Rainbow, which debuted on Broadway in 2012. Bella Ramsey plays Garland's daughter Lorna Luft while Gemma-Leah Devereux plays her daughter Liza Minnelli.

'When there's a better understanding of what it takes for a person to continue under certain circumstances there is a level of empathy and respect that you can't help but feel, ' she said of playing the role and getting to know Garland better.

Calling it a Jophie night, she said, "It was so amusing !" I mean, we were driving around this pink Hummer limo. She was quoted as saying that she has always wanted to be a mother and it'll happen according to God's will.

In a 2009 poll of gay men and lesbians, Judy Garland was voted the number one female gay icon.

The slang term "Friend of Dorothy" derives from her performance as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz, and became a code for gay people to use to identify themselves.

"When she died, in the bathroom of her Chelsea mews house on June 22, 1969, the show and sense of loss were nearly unbearable", explained Luft.

In a 1967 interview, Garland defended her gay fans.

She was also questioned about her gay following in 1965, to which she replied: "I couldn't care less".
