Ready to work with India's anti-trust watchdog: Google

These screens are only shown to Android users in Europe

As reported by Reuters, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) started investigating the matter last year and in April this year, the CCI found that there could be a strong case and the committee has ordered its investigation unit to launch a full probe into the matter. 'The CCI has (preliminarily) found Google abused its dominant position.' The EU hit Google with a €4.34 billion ($5 billion) fine in the Android case.

Google a year ago filed an appeal with the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) against a judgment by the fair trade regulator that fined the tech giant Rs 136.86 crore in February for abuse of its dominance and biased search practices in India.

The exact nature of the new complaint is not known, but people aware of the matter said that Google executives will be called to appear before CCI as part of the investigation.

Liverpool’s Mane, Salah share Golden Boot with Arsenal’s Aubameyang
Salah scored 32 league goals last season, a record for a 38-game Premier League campaign. Salah won the Golden Boot past year during his first campaign at Anfield.

In a statement, a Google spokesperson said the company "likes to cooperate to show that Android has created more competition rather than less."
"Google was leveraging its dominance in the market for online general Web search, to strengthen its position in the market for online syndicate search services", the CCI had said in its order a year ago.

While the European Union regulators had looked into how Google forced manufacturers to pre-install Google Chrome browser together with its Google Play app store, on Android devices, details of the complaint against Google in India could not be determined. Google meanwhile said via a spokesman that the company is working with the CCI 'to demonstrate how Android has led to more competition and innovation, not less.' He said that Android had enabled millions of Indians to connect to the internet by making mobile devices more affordable. The ruling was challenged by Google. The European Commission looked at Google's Search, Android, and online ads practices and found that Google abused its position in the market. In that case, Google's earnings linked to its web browser and search engine could be considered to assess the fine, New Delhi-based antitrust lawyer Gautam Shahi said.

The competition watchdog said the penalty was being imposed on Google for "infringing anti-trust conduct".
