Former president Jimmy Carter undergoes surgery to repair broken hip after fall at his home

A spokeswoman says former U.S. President Jimmy Carter says he has broken his hip.

"President Carter said his main concern is that turkey season ends this week, and he has not reached his limit", the center said in a written statement.

Carter, 94, fell at his home in Plains, Georgia, Monday morning as he was leaving to go turkey hunting, The Carter Center announced. "So happy to hear the surgery was successful and dad and I look forward to seeing him very soon!"

Carter is the longest-retired president in USA history, and in 2017 became the first president to live to the 40th anniversary of his inauguration. "He hopes the State of Georgia will allow him to roll over the unused limit to next year", Congileo wrote.

Carter disclosed in 2015 that he had melanoma that had spread to his liver and brain.

He received his first radiation treatment at age 90, and four months later, he was - remarkably - cancer free.

The 39th president of the United States is now recovering "comfortably" in the hospital alongside his wife, Rosalynn.

At the time he revealed the cancer, he said he felt "perfectly at ease with whatever comes".

A devout Christian, Carter regularly teaches Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church, drawing hundreds of visitors to Plains for each session.
