PBS reveals 'Arthur' character Mr. Ratburn is gay

Fedor Rostov

In the episode, which aired on May 13, Jane Lynch voices Mr Ratburn's bossy, uptight sister, Patty, who threatens to turn their kindly teacher into someone the children don't like. It comes not long after Teacher Appreciation Week in the United States, when Arthur PBS tweeted a form encouraging pupils to nominate their favourite teacher, giving its own example of Mr Ratburn. This is not the first time that the children's show has featured LGBT character.

For anyone who missed it, Mr. Ratburn married his male partner on the most recent episode of #Arthur. "The kids show @arthur.pbs celebrated their first same-sex wedding with the beloved teacher getting married!"

In comes the man of the hour, walking arm in arm with Patrick, a local chocolatier - straight out of a Nora Ephron movie, no?

"Ratburn marrying?" one of the children asks. The students assume his intended is a woman, but when they get to the wedding, they meet his new husband.

Gamers, animators and fans have shared their congratulations, with comments including: "Love conquers hate", "Welcome out", and "Arthur says, 'Gay rights"'.

Buster finds it hard to accept teachers even have a life outside of the classroom.

'Mr. Ratburn is the gay icon I never knew I needed, ' a viewer wrote.

"I am disappointed by PBS's decision", Marc Brown, author of the "Arthur" books and creator of both television series, said to the Times in a statement. There's still no word on why Arthur and his friends haven't graduated the third grade after 22 years.
