Moon's Shrinking May Be Causing Moonquakes

SHRIVELLING The Moon is wrinkling like a raisin as its core shrinks

The researchers behind the new study used an algorithm to hone in on these quakes, discovering that eight of the 28 were within 18.6 miles (30 kilometers) of the faults pictured by the orbiter.

The study is published on May 14 in the journal Nature Geoscience. Between 1969 and 1977, four of these instruments, except the one planted by Apollo 11, remained functional and measured 28 shallow quakes.

Each recorded quake was about a magnitude 2 to 5 on the Richter scale. Scientists know the Moon is too cold and still to have plate tectonics, like Earth, which keeps our whole crust sliding around in giant, continent-sized pieces. But most researchers thought the process of cooling was over, and the process that created faults ceased long ago. They found it is less than 4 percent. Other events such as meteorite impacts can produce quakes, but those would produce different seismic signatures.

NASA first saw instances of the Moon shrinking in 2010 when it analyzed imagery from its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and found that it "shriveled like a raisin as its interior cooled, leaving behind thousands of cliffs called thrust faults on the moon's surface".

The head of NASA has described his plan to put a woman on the moon by 2024 - saying he hopes it will inspire a generation of women. Despite this tectonic activity occurs. The valley was explored in 1972 by the Apollo 17 mission astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt.

-It is truly remarkable to see how the data from almost 50 years ago and the LRO mission were combined to advance our understanding of the Moon while suggesting where future missions to study the inner processes of the Moon will take place.

Only 14% workers feel comfortable talking about mental health
A Foundation spokesperson said: "With the help ob businesses across the United Kingdom - and even globally - this year we want to reach more people than ever".

A team of geologists believe these cliff-like features are evidence of lunar tectonic activity.

NASA revealed that the moon is gradually shrinking over the last several hundred million years, hence causing wrinkles in its crust leading to moonquakes.

NASA says the moon isn't the only part of our solar system that is "shrinking with age", as planet Mercury has shrank more than the moon has. When study co-author Thomas Watters, a planetary scientist at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, mapped scarps-or steep slopes usually caused by faults-on the moon, he noticed many of them looked relatively fresh, only 50 million years old or less with signs that boulders had rolled down the slopes.

It is being called Artemis, who was goddess of the hunt and the Moon. Just five years from now, NASA will send one woman and one man back to the moon, landing on the lunar body's south pole.

"We need a transfer module to get from the gateway down to lower lunar orbit".

Bridenstine said he's heartened by the fact that the extra money, if approved by Congress, will come from outside NASA, rather than being taken from the International Space Station or other departments within the space agency. LRO is managed by NASA Goddard for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
