US Pres. Trump’s "secret" agreement "leaked", reveals a concession for Mexico

President Donald Trump continued to insist Tuesday that there is a secret component of his migration deal with Mexico, even flashing a piece of paper to reporters that he claimed spelled out the undisclosed portion.

"I am pleased to inform you that The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico", Trump announced Friday evening.

Such a step would require the Mexican government to consult the Senate on how to proceed, Ebrard said.

The President tweeted Monday, saying tariffs will be reinstated if Mexico's legislature doesn't vote to approve the deal.

He did not go into details, but Mexico said it had agreed to discuss one of Trump's top demands, a so-called "safe third country agreement" - in which migrants entering Mexican territory must apply for asylum there rather than the United States - if the flow of undocumented Central Americans continues.

Three Mexican officials said Saturday they were not aware of any side accord in the works, and that agricultural trade hadn't been discussed during three days of negotiations in Washington that culminated in a joint communique late Friday.

"They have started a very strong action".

But Trump has repeatedly suggested there is another secret part of the deal that would require more of Mexico.

Mexico's foreign minister said Monday that the deal doesn't include any secret provisions. 'I think they probably got it the probably from somebody who worked here and said how well they were doing.

"High tariff rates constitute the single most restrictive barrier to USA wine exports", the group says on its website.

It still needs to be approved by Mexico's legislative body, but now those lawmakers know that if they don't give the green light, then Trump's tariffs are back on the table. Mr Trump added American winemakers had complained to him that French wine can be imported into the U.S. "for nothing", but they have to pay steep duties to export their wine into France.

But what is known of the agreement has drawn criticism from human rights groups who condemn what they call a draconian crackdown on migration and the criminalization of immigrants. Under this arrangement, we can return asylum-seekers to Mexico while their claims - nearly always ultimately rejected - are adjudicated. 'This is one page of a very long and very good agreement for both Mexico and the United States'.

It has agreed to deploy 6,000 officers from its newly created National Guard to its own southern border in a bid to reduce the number of migrants entering the country.

"It was all done because of the tariffs and because of the relationship that we have with Mexico", he told reporters Monday, following a call-in interview with CNBC Monday morning in which he said officials had "talked about it for months and months and months", but couldn't reach agreement until the threat.

Last fall, in a Twitter outburst against French president Emmanuel Macron, Trump, who owns Trump Winery, a Charlottesville vineyard run by Eric Trump, claimed that wine in the U.S. is just as good as the beverage made in France.
