Trump Delays ICE's 10-City Immigration Raids for Two Weeks

Donald Trump

The Post reports that the administration has instead been in direct contact with acting ICE Director Mark Morgan and other agency officials.

An operation was slated to launch on Sunday and expected to target up to 2,000 families facing deportation orders in as many as 10 USA cities, including Houston, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles, the Washington Post reported on Friday. Minneapolis officials are "prohibited from taking any action to detect or apprehend people based exclusively on their immigration status". Once out in the community, their court cases get put on hold and they often ignore summonses.

Saturday morning, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, released a statement calling on the administration to halt immigration raids.

Pelosi had been sharply critical of the planned raids. The Obama and Trump administrations have targeted families in previous operations.

This one is different because Trump announced Monday on Twitter that it would be the start of an effort to deport millions of people in the country illegally, a near-impossibility given limited resources of ICE, which makes the arrests and carries out deportation orders. "We are a country that places a high premium on families and we need to be cautious about separating parents from children or uprooting entire families".

The tweet, posted around 3 p.m., brought the latest policy reversal - this one, potentially temporary - from a president who has kept Washington guessing with his frequent changes of heart. "Further, I reiterated that CPD will not cooperate with or facilitate any ICE enforcement actions", Lightfoot said in a statement.

"This outrageous tearing of families apart and causing fear in communities across America is clearly a political stunt, coming on the heels of Trump's kick-off of his re-election campaign", they said.

Trump said he expected some cities to resist, especially so-called "sanctuary cities" where law enforcement officials have said they could decline to act on some immigration orders from the federal government.

Migrant apprehensions at the U.S. border with Mexico reached 144,000 in May, the highest number in 13 years.

"Any non-US citizen (including a Green Card holder) can be arrested by ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] for any immigration violation".

Raids targeting undocumented immigrants with final deportation orders could be carried out as soon as this weekend.

"If you're here illegally, then you should be removed", he said.

The Herald reported those cities are Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, New York, and San Francisco.

The zero-tolerance policy under Trump announced in April of past year separated more than 2,000 children from their parents to deter future migration and was halted months later by executive order.
