Black Music Fest Halts Double-Price Tickets for Whites After Uproar

The Afrofuture Fest in Detroit charged white people more for tickets than people of color prompting Eventbrite to threaten to pull the page

AfroFuture Fest, scheduled to be held in Detroit in August, appeared to change their ticket prices to $20 general admission after receiving backlash for a ticketing inconsistency that offered early bird "people of color" tickets for $10, while "non-POC" tickets cost $20. How do you want me to come to a performance and perform these songs off a mixtape that is titled after this white woman that you would have charged double to get in here?

It was so controversial that Jillian Graham, a Detroit-based rapper who goes by Tiny Jag, dropped out of the event.

But on Sunday, they reversed it, citing safety concerns over "threats from white supremacists".

Jag said it was hard to cancel the show, and apologized to her fans.

Replying to the announcement, Alex Daly tweeted: "I support the intention of trying to level the playing field, but the original implementation is discriminatory".

Ms Graham - who identifies as biracial - told the New York Times that when she heard about the policy she felt "an overall recognition that this is just wrong".

Ticket sale platform Eventbrite, meanwhile, claimed that the race-based pricing violated their terms and conditions, and told AfroFest organizers that the event would be removed if the ticket tiers were not revised.

Graham - whose grandmother is white - talked about while she understands the goal of equity and equality for the sad community, she called the moved "non-innovative" and "no longer resolution-targeted".

"We do not permit events that require attendees to pay different prices based on their protected characteristics such as race or ethnicity", the statement said.

"In this case, we have notified the creator of the event about this violation and requested that they alter their event accordingly", the statement read. Organizers explained that equity is about everyone having "what they need to be successful", and the ticket pricing was designed so that "the most marginalized communities (people of color) are provided with an equitable chance at enjoying events in their own community (black Detroit)".

A spokesperson said: "Our mission is to bring the world together through live experiences".

Organisers - who had said the pricing model was created to ensure "the most marginalised communities" were given a chance to attend - are now charging $20 per ticket for all.
