USWNT Celebrates Women's World Cup Title With Parade in NYC

Women's World Cup Final- United States v Netherlands

The players have helped lead the global push for gender equality in the workplace, suing the U.S. Soccer Federation in March for gender discrimination and alleging they are paid less than the men's team.

Manchin's legislation comes on the heels of the US Women's National Team's stunning performance during the women's World Cup, ultimately beating the Netherlands 2-0 to win the tournament on Sunday.

In more recent times the USWNT has been fighting in the courts.

Members of the USA women's team will earn more in 2019 as a result of their World Cup triumph in France.

The women's team members earn less than 10 % of what the men earn, despite the team outperforming the men both on the field and in revenue generation.

The men? They haven't done so hot.

Interested in World Cup?

And as we now know, they have quite a few supporters on Capitol Hill.

The bill proposes that federal funds would not be appropriated to provide support for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held jointly by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. That's not going to happen until the female players' demands are met, said Manchin.

Manchin said he was inspired by a letter from the head women's soccer coach at West Virginia University, Nikki Izzo-Brown, who said it was wrong for women players to be paid and valued less for their efforts.

The proposal from Manchin following the US women's team's World Cup victory in France came after receiving a letter from the head women's soccer coach at West Virginia University, Nikki Izzo-Brown. "It's plain wrong, and it's time to #PayTheWomen".

The most recent ticker-tape parade was held in 2015, when the United States women last won the World Cup.

Past honorees have included John F. Kennedy after his nomination as Democratic presidential candidate; Neil Armstrong and other Apollo 11 astronauts after their mission to the moon; and Queen Elizabeth II.

Ahead of Wednesday's ticker tape parade through New York City, Mayor Bill De Blasio said if he was elected president, he'd pass an executive order to make sure the Treasury Department shells out what the women are owed, and he'd enforce the Paycheck Fairness Act.
