It should be noted that astronomers were not aware of supermassive black hole collision until now, and this new development will help humans to know more about the aftermath of these crashes.

"For its time in history, the galaxy harboring the newfound supermassive black hole pair is the most luminous galaxy in the universe". The discovery provides an anchor point for estimating how many supermassive black hole pairs are within detection distance of Earth.

"This is an intriguing peek at a disc very close to a black hole, so close that the velocities and the intensity of the gravitational pull are affecting how we see the photons of light", explains Bianchi.

Utilizing images obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope, a United States collaboration of astronomers have detected two supermassive black holes on a collision course, 2.5 billion light-years from Earth. In case of this newly detected pair, the due is still useful, and their discovery could aid scientists to gauge what number of nearby supermassive black holes are discharging gravitational waves that we could recognize now.

Supermassive black holes are not directly visible through an optical telescope, but these are surrounded by clumps of bright stars and warm gas. "When they pointed Hubble at it to uncover the origins of its spectacular gas clouds, the researchers discovered that the system contained not one but two massive black holes". Because of the status of the galaxy, researchers would have guessed that the black hole was essentially starving, but the presence of a material disc throws that assumption into question.

This slowdown lasts almost indefinitely and is known as the final parsec problem. The gravitational waves the two black holes generate prior to collision already dwarf those previously detected from the collision of small black holes and neutron stars. Bigger galaxies have bigger black holes and therefore stronger gravitational waves.

Successful detection of gravitational waves would give astrophysicists a better understanding of how massive galaxies and black holes evolve.

Astronomers can't just look for stalled pairs because long before the black holes are 1 parsec apart, they are too close to distinguish as two separate objects.

Detecting the gravitational wave background using one of these pulsar timing arrays takes patience and plenty of monitored stars.

As the two black holes get closer to each other, they start sending gravitational waves rippling through space-time. A single pulsar's rhythm might be disrupted by only a few hundred nanoseconds over a decade.

"The merger of 2 black holes is the most powerful event in the Universe, releasing more power than the rest of the Universe combined". However, knowing a black hole is present is made easier by the wealth material they draw in, and it's assumed that large black holes exist at the heart of most large galaxies like our own Milky Way.
