Raids targeting undocumented immigrants set to begin within days

The Trump administration is to begin rounding up and deporting thousands of migrants living in the US illegally this weekend according to

This means that if an undocumented immigrant who is at the scene but is not the target of the arrest will be detained and deported as well.

The deportation operation is focused on illegal immigrants who have been ordered deported after completing their court hearings and have ignored ICE efforts to schedule an orderly departure.

The plan would also allow for the possible detention and deportation of people who were not specifically targeted. ICE reportedly plans to target 10 major US cities - Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York City and San Francisco.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy came to President Donald Trump's defense, telling reporters Thursday that part of the president's motivation for launching ICE raids this weekend is the inaction in Congress since previous raids were delayed. But this week, sources in Washington say they are back - with ICE expected to pursue at least 2,000 immigrants beginning Sunday.

But the president, speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, said he did not share those concerns, as the deportations were not a secret.

Hancock, the Denver Agency for Human Rights & Community Partnerships and the Denver Office of Immigrant & Refugee Affairs reiterated that residents - no matter their legal status - should "look out for and check in on each other" and to know their rights under the law.

Lightfoot has also instructed the Police Department to not cooperate with ICE in immigration raids.

A senior administration immigration official says that ICE has about one million names on a list of targets in the raids, which have been postponed for two weeks, partly due to resistance from inside ICE, according to the Time report.

Ms and Mr Manukyan had unsuccessfully gone through IVF in August 2018 using an embryo they thought was theirs. Despite the custody battle, she praised the Queens woman who gave birth to the twins and wished her the best.

ICE has declined to discuss the weekend's operation, including whether those families are among those being targeted. "It's very simple. It's not something I like doing, but people have come into our country illegally", Trump said.

Lightfoot announced Friday a new executive action to protect immigrants including investing another $250,000 into Chicago's Legal Protection Fund, providing guidance to city-owned facilities and terminating ICE's access to police databases.

"As always, ICE prioritizes the arrest and removal of unlawfully present aliens who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security", said ICE spokesperson Alathea Smock in a statement Thursday.

"The president and his new team of immigration "tough guys" want to show how tough they are, but the political motivations are brazen and the cruelty that will be inflicted by neighborhood "family operations" will be widely felt in American communities", Rivlin said.

"We haven't heard anything specifically in New Jersey, but we are on alert", said Hera Mir, communications and operations associate for New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice.

Advocates in border areas have "received word" that up to 1,000 families are expected to arrive at an immigration center in Dilley, Texas, according to attorneys representing separated families in a long-running lawsuit.

"They are absolutely going to happen", he said of the raids, however.
