US Criminal Justice System Ignores Crimes Like Epstein’s While Punishing the Vulnerable

While President Trump is due in Hunting Valley for a private campaign fundraiser Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta is laboring to keep his job and explain the 2008 sweetheart deal he gave politically connected Jeffrey Epstein when facing sex trafficking

Labor Secretary Acosta has now resigned after laboring to keep his job and reputation after the indictment in NY of Epstein and his press conference giving a dubious defense of the sweetheart plea deal he gave Epstein in 2008 when Acosta was acting U.S. Attorney in Miami.

Trump, with Acosta at his side, said Friday he did not ask his secretary to leave and "I hate to see this happen".

Last year, the Miami Herald published a blockbuster report accusing Acosta of treating Epstein leniently in the plea deal, which allowed the financier to serve just 13 months in prison and another year under house arrest, despite Federal Bureau of Investigation allegations against him of sexual abuse and the trafficking of nearly three dozen young women and girls, Sputnik reported.

Acosta also failed the broader public, in letting a wealthy man whom he forced to register as a sexual offender to be released, free to continue his crimes if he desired, if not in Florida, then anywhere else in the world. "And not just let it go, we'll help him, '" Verheyden-Hilliard told Sputnik. The president, who publicly faults the news media nearly daily, said Acosta put the blame there, too.

Acosta has served in Trump's Cabinet since April 2017.

Given that background, UltraViolet's Thomas said, "Congress should open a full investigation into President Trump, who was directly implicated as an enabler of Epstein, and is self-confessed serial sexual predator with almost two dozen accusations against him".

After federal attorneys in NY announced the new charges against Epstein this week, Acosta tweeted that he was "pleased" by their decision.

"This pathetic agreement with Acosta's and Epstein's lawyers that allowed him [Epstein] to plead to this tiny little offense of basically like a prostitution charge, as if little girls could be prostitutes, and then also immunity for co-conspirators, which I think is going to become a big issue", Verheyden-Hilliard explained. Former president Bill Clinton reportedly flew on Epstein's plane at least 26 times.

Trump said Friday that deputy Pat Pizzella will took over as acting labour secretary, one of a host of positions now vacant or with officials serving in an acting capacity.

Parts of Louisiana under hurricane warning as Tropical Storm Barry nears
In some locations , particularly extreme south Louisiana, evacuations were mandatory, Plaquemines Parish being among them. "We can not pump our way out of the water levels. that are expected to hit the city of New Orleans ", she warned.

Mr Trump told reporters that he and Mr Acosta spoke on the phone earlier on Friday and that it was Mr Acosta's decision to step down.

According to an indictment, Mr Epstein arranged for girls under the age of 18 to perform nude "massages" and other sex acts for him in his NY and Florida homes, and paid some girls to recruit others, from at least 2002 to 2005.

"As part of the arrangement, Acosta agreed - despite a federal law to the contrary - that the deal would be kept from the victims".

Mr Acosta defended the secretly-negotiated plea deal in a news conference only two days ago.

Trump called Epstein a "terrific guy" in a 2002 magazine feature, but has said this week soon after that time the pair ended their friendship.

Mr Acosta had been under pressure from Democrats to quit. Epstein would have faced a potential life sentence in prison. "Today's world treats victims very, very differently".

He said that the labor secretary press conference Wednesday "did not play to good reviews", seeing as Acosta did not show a lot of heart or empathy, and refused to apologize to the victims.

"I feel power and influence obviously influenced the scales of justice", said Kirk Blouin, town manager of Palm Beach, Fla., who prior to his post served 29 years in the Palm Beach police department.
