Iran drone destroyed by U.S. in Strait of Hormuz, reveals Donald Trump

President Donald Trump said the USA shot down and "immediately destroyed" an Iranian drone that approached the USS Boxer near the Strait of Hormuz, the latest sign of escalating military tensions around the critical oil chokepoint. It was not immediately clear how it was destroyed and what type of drone was involved.

He said the USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship, took "defensive action" when the drone ignored "multiple calls to stand down and was threatening the safety of the ship and the ship's crew".

"The ship took defensive action against the UAS to ensure the safety of the ship and its crew", he added.

On June 20, Iranian forces shot down a USA surveillance drone over the Strait of Hormuz, claiming it had violated Iranian airspace, which the US denied. Trump approved retaliatory military strikes but halted them minutes before they were launched.

"The vessel that Iran towed to its waters after receiving a distress call, was later seized with the order from the court as we found out that it was smuggling fuel", the Guards said in a statement quoted by state television. The United States reserves the right to defend our personnel, facilities and interests.

The drone was destroyed using electronic jamming, according to a USA defense official.

Oil Prices Slip as Inventories Build
The market shrugged of another incident involving a tanker in the Middle East amid tensions between the United States and Iran. However, Iran later denied it was willing to negotiate over its ballistic missile programme, contradicting a claim by U.S.

Tensions in the Gulf region are so high there are fears the USA and Iran could stumble into war.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in an interview with Bloomberg News on Wednesday that said his country is capable of shutting the Strait of Hormuz, but does not want to.

Tensions have been on the rise between Washington and Tehran after Trump previous year withdrew from a landmark global deal under which Iran scaled back its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

The state media later published footage of Iranian speedboats circling around the Panamanian-flagged Riah tanker.

Since May mysterious attacks the US blames on Iran struck six oil tankers near the strait.

The tanker was seized south of Iran's Larak Island, Iran said.
