The event was an exciting one for the royal couple as they competed against a host of celebrities, including comedian John Bishop and adventurer Bear Grylls, going head-to-head in the charity race.

Originally scheduled to take place on Friday, August 9, the event was brought forward to Thursday afternoon due to weather warnings for high winds and rain. Prince William's boat came third while Kate's came in seventh.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge looked well-rested following their family holiday, and were even joined by their eldest son, Prince George, for the occasion.

With their eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, cheering them on, the sporty parents took to the water.

As it crossed the finish line, the race commentator noted: "Duchess of Cambridge!" The prince will compete on behalf of Child Bereavement UK, while his three other charities will be represented by the celebrity ambassadors Bear Grylls, historian Dan Snow and English footballer Fara Williams.

The duke and duchess hope the King's Cup regatta will become an annual event, increasing awareness of the benefits of sport, while also raising funds for their charities. Kate looked lovely in her casual-cool outfit matching everyone else in a polo T-shirt, a pair of navy shorts and trainers.

Not to be outdone by her older brother, four-year-old Charlotte was later caught sticking her tongue out at photographers while her mum Kate attempted to reign her in.

Eight state-of-the-art racing yachts competed on the Solent, head to head, each representing a charity championed by William and Kate.

Spectators watched the race from a 800-seater grandstand, while footage was also played on screens across the town.
