Android users can log into some Google services using their fingerprint

Oppo Reno 10x Zoom in display fingerprint sensor

Google now lets you sign in to some of its services on Chrome on Android using just your fingerprint, rather than having to type in a password.

The new feature is arriving on Google Pixel devices today and access will arrive on all Android phones running Nougat or later over the next few days. Using the FIDO2 standard, created to improve authentication on the web (as opposed to on an Android app) users will only have to register their fingerprint or screen lock on their phone once to use it for a native app or the compatible Google services sites on the internet. Your fingerprint or screen unlock system authenticates you on-device and then simply communicates with Google's servers with an "authentic" or "not authentic", which means Google never sees your fingerprint, password, etc.

Google points out to those anxious about privacy, that fingerprints are never sent to Google's servers and are stored securely on the user's phone. The device must have a valid screen lock like a fingerprint scanner, a PIN or a pattern lock.

Passwords can't go away fast enough, and if you're the family tech support guy or gal I'm sure you'd agree.

Several central IN counties under Tornado Watch with storms expected overnight
Tuesday will see highs drop back to the low 80s but showers and thunderstorms could pop up throughout the day. Temperatures will reach the 90s again by Wednesday with mostly dry conditions all the way into next weekend.

So what is the advantage for Android users?

To use this feature, Android smartphone users will need to update their Google Play Services application and enable the functionality in their Android smartphone settings. FIDO2 is much more secure than regular passwords.

In an effort to keep your account secure, Google will regularly ask you to confirm your password when trying to access your account on a device you've been logged into for a while. That will remove the need for you to enter your account's password manually, saving a lot of your time, especially if you are bad at remembering passwords.
