Contacts on iPhones vulnerable to hack attack

Apple to pay $1 million to anyone who can hack iPhone

Just days after Face ID was hacked and the company's "user-hostile" iPhone battery practices were exposed, an extraordinary story of Apple neglect has resulted in a warning every iPhone and iPad user needs to know about. It's actually in SQLite, one of the standard "lite" databases used across the industry, especially in mobile platforms like Android and iOS.

Since the Contacts app is a "trusted source" on iOS, once the researchers replaced a specific component of the Contacts app, the malicious code could be activated and carry out the hacker's commands with iOS being none the wiser. Even so, there is no platform in the world which is 100% secure and the latest research from Check Point software shows that contacts saved on iPhones are vulnerable to hacking attacks that could infect the iPhones with malware.

"Persistence (keeping the code on the device after a restart) is hard to achieve on iOS as all executable files must be signed as part of Apple's Secure Boot".

"Wait, what? How come a four-year-old bug has never been fixed?" write Check Point's researchers in their report.

Russian Federation honors 'national heroes' killed in mysterious rocket blast
The ministry claimed "there were no harmful emissions into the atmosphere, the radiation background is normal". Those injured included military specialists and civilian engineers for the rocket engine's developer.

This story has been published from a wire agency feed without modifications to the text. Surprisingly, Apple has not responded to this vulnerability officially. Principal security researcher at Jamf - who's found more than a few issues within the macOS - has said that "if you're a large, well-resourced company such as Apple, who claims to place a premium on security, having a bug-bounty program is a no brainer".

Apple will begin offering security scientists extraordinary iPhones and will finally roll out a bug bounty project for Mac, as per media. The company in 2016 rewarded a bounty of $200,000 to the hackers to find out bugs in the iOS that would allow hackers to access the data in the devices.

Speaking at the Def Con 2019 security conference in Las Vegas this week, researchers from Check Point demonstrated a rare vulnerability in iOS that could allow attackers to run malicious code on Apple devices.

It has been a long time in coming for Apple to extend its bug bounty program to all of its platforms.
