Elizabeth Warren calls on Walmart to stop selling guns

A Walmart store is seen

Walmart is removing signs and displays depicting violent video game scenes in the wake of two mass shootings last weekend, but the retail giant says it will continue selling the video games themselves and is resisting pressure to remove firearms from its shelves.

In a statement to USA Today, she added, "This action does not reflect a long-term change in our video game assortment".

Democratic presidential contenders on Saturday urged Congress to take action to curb gun violence following mass shootings last weekend in Texas and OH that left 31 dead.

On Sunday, a Walmart spokesperson told Bloomberg the company has no plans to stop selling firearms. She points out that the frequency of automobile deaths in the United States declined with widespread safety measures, such as seat belts and air bags.

Thomas Marshall, an employee in San Bruno California who began the petition, told Reuters the decision to remove signage and displays of violent video games is good but not enough.

Tyler Louden's tweet shows an empty games aisle where most of the video games previously on sale appear to be pulled.

Except for Walmart's outlook on the cause of gun violence. Walmart should use its power to stop selling guns in its stores until politicians and gun manufacturers get their act together and raise the standard for gun ownership in this country, ' he said.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, in an August 7 memo to employees, wrote in part, "We will be thoughtful and deliberate in our responses, and we will act in a way that reflects the best values and ideals of our company".

Social media users slammed the move, too, and #BoycottWalmart was trending Friday on Twitter.

U.S. Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado - where 12 were killed in a high-profile mass shooting at Columbine High School in 1999 and another 12 were killed and 70 injured during a 2012 massacre at a movie theater - said he would "galvanize every single federal agency" to treat gun violence as a "public safety crisis". ESPN postponed the airing of an esports competition for shooting game "Apex Legends".

The shootings, which together left 31 people dead, have renewed calls for greater limits on gun purchases, including background checks and an assault weapons ban. No shots were fired and no one was injured.

On Thursday, panicked shoppers fled a Walmart in Springfield, Missouri, after a man carrying a rifle and wearing body armor walked around the store before being stopped by an off-duty firefighter.

On Friday, Massachusetts Sen. Walmart did not immediately return CNN's request for comment. Walmart is still actively displaying and selling guns.

"The weapons they sell are killing their own customers and employees", Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA wrote on Twitter on Friday morning.
