United Kingdom parliament speaker says will step down by 31 October

Parliament

The precise timing of the prorogation, brought immediately after tonight's planned vote on whether to hold a snap general election, appears to be meant to focus the minds of Parliamentarians.

JOHN BERCOW, the Speaker for the British House of Commons has announced today that he is to stand down after 22 years as a Member of Parliament.

Fellow Deputy Speaker Eleanor Laing, a Tory MP for Epping Forest, has also said she will run for the job, as will the third deputy Dame Rosie Winterton.

"If the House votes tonight for an early general election, my tenure as Speaker and MP will end when this parliament ends", he said.

She had been previously suggested by some campaigners against a no-deal Brexit as head of an interim cross-party Government if Prime Minister Boris Johnson was forced from power in the coming weeks.

Bercow, whose cries of, "Order, Order!" have gone viral amid months of Brexit chaos, has at times been a divisive figure in the Speaker's chair.

But historic parliamentary convention states that he will generally be unopposed by the major political parties, who will not field a candidate in the Speaker's constituency.

Bercow, known for his thundering cries of "Order!".

Pakistan delivers joint statement at UNHRC on behalf of over 50 countries
After the removal of Article 370, Donald Trump made a big statement about the relationship between India and Pakistan. India says updating of the NRC is a statutory, transparent, legal process mandated by the Supreme Court of India.

Opposition MPs lined up to shake Bercow's hand when parliament eventually wrapped at 2am.

The prorogation ceremony included an address from the Lady Usher of the Black Rod on the House floor - with Mr Bercow then expected to follow her to the House of Lords to complete the procedure.

"I very gently say to you, as you are generally a good-natured fellow, it is quite inappropriate when standing at the bar of the House of Commons to be bellowing".

Signs with "silenced" written on them were held by some Labour MPs and Green MP Caroline Lucas.

Mr Kawczynski said: "Without hesitation I will be supporting Harriet Harman to be next Speaker".

David Lammy said "no one has stood up for Parliamentary sovereignty as effectively as John Bercow over the past few years" following the announcement, calling him "a true protector of our democracy". With parliament suspended later on Monday, MPs now have only one week in session at the end of October before Britain is set to leave the European Union on October 31.

Earlier and in a day of drama, MPs voted for the disclosure of government advisers' private messages on Brexit and a Jeremy Corbyn motion for the government to comply with the rule of law passed.
