FDA accuses Juul of illegally advertising its products as safe

FDA calls out Juul for promoting vaping as safer than cigarettes

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to JUUL Labs Inc. for illegally marketing its products as less harmful than regular cigarettes by engaging in labeling, advertising, and/or other activities directed toward consumers, including a presentation given to youth at a school. In a letter to the company's CEO Kevin Burns, the FDA demanded that Juul change its marketing practices or risk being hit with a hefty fine or having its products seized. Juul commands three-quarters of the USA e-cigarette market, with sales growing 783% between June 2018 and this year to $942.6 million, Wells Fargo reported.

The warning letter identified several problematic statements made by a JUUL representative speaking at a school at an unspecified date, including that the product was "much safer than cigarettes" and that 'FDA would approve it any day. "JUUL has ignored the law, and very concerningly, has made some of these statements in school to our nation's youth", said Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Ned Sharpless, in a statement.

These letters are the latest in a series of actions the agency has taken as part of its continued commitment to providing strong oversight of e-cigarettes and other electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and the latest development in the FDA's ongoing investigation related to JUUL.

Juul has said that they are looking at the letter and will fully cooperate with the FDA.

"Common sense says if you do not know what you are smoking, don't smoke it, and right now we don't know what you are smoking in a lot of these vaping substances", the New York Democrat said. "We need to do all we can to protect the public from tobacco-related disease and death, and prevent e-cigarettes from becoming an on-ramp to nicotine addiction for a generation of youth". FDA investigators found the company broke the law, according to CNBC, "by selling or distributing them as modified risk tobacco products without an FDA order in effect that permits such sale or distribution".

Taliban vow to fight on after Trump says talks are 'dead'
The president also stated that USA forces have "hit the Taliban harder in the last four days than they've been in over 10 years". Central Command, indicated to reporters that the United States was likely to increase operations against the Taliban.

On Friday, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the agency is now aware of at least 450 possible cases of severe lung disease that could be caused by vaping across 33 states.

"Juul has maintained that its products are meant to convert adult smokers to what it described in the past as a less-harmful alternative". In other communications, the company says it can not make claims its products are safer, in line with FDA regulations.

Vince Willmore, a spokesman for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said Juul helped hook kids on e-cigarettes by combining high-tech designs and sweet flavors such as mint and mango with a nicotine-salt formulation or salt-based nicotine e-liquids.

Villa goes on to give Juul just 15 days to submit a written response describing its "corrective actions" in detail. We remain committed to using all available tools to ensure that e-cigarettes and other tobacco products aren't being marketed or sold to kids.

And they continue to be the most used tobacco product among United States teens.
