Speaker John Bercow to stand down after Tory election threats

If they don't he will quit October 31 - the day Britain is due to leave the European Union.

"There are many challenges ahead for Parliament and I believe I have the necessary experience to lead the way having served in a variety of roles including as a Minister, a government whip, a shadow minister and a backbencher".

JOHN BERCOW, the Speaker for the British House of Commons has announced today that he is to stand down after 22 years as a Member of Parliament.

The 56 year-old said he made a promise to his wife and three children that the 2017 general election would be his last.

"This is a pledge that I intend to keep".

"If the House does not so vote, I have concluded that the least disruptive and most democratic course of action would be for me to stand down at the close of business on Thursday, October 31".

John's hospitality in hosting annual events for our community at Speaker's House has given us further opportunity to make our case at Westminster and to thank many of our loyal supporters, member charities and fundraising groups for their support.

A video grab from footage broadcast by the UK Parliament's Parliamentary Recording Unit (PRU) shows Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow announcing to MP's that he would step down from his role on 9 September 2019 in London.

Iranian fan dies; set herself on fire outside court
She was initially charged in March and released from jail after three days and she had waited six months for her trial. Although there is no official ban in place, women in Iran are often refused entry as reported by the BBC .

Mr Bercow has previously voiced his outrage at the prorogation describing it a "constitutional outrage". It all ended around 2 a.m. (9 p.m. ET) when opposition lawmakers lined up to shake the Speaker's hand, capping off an acrimonious day in Parliament.

MPs approved, without a vote, a motion from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn demanding the government abide by the rule of law.

Senior Conservative MP Michael Gove said it was clear Mr Bercow loved the House of Commons and democracy.

Mr. Bercow, 56, is best known for presiding over debates, bellowing "Order!".

The awesome scenes followed another Commons defeat for Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his second attempt to call an early general election.

Boris Johnson will not face Prime Minister's Questions until the period is over and his scheduled questioning by the Commons liaison committee on Wednesday has been cancelled.

During the five-week suspension, parties will hold their annual conferences but no debates, votes or committee scrutiny sessions will take place.
