United States of America beaten by France in quarter-finals in China

Jazz Rudy Gobert Donovan Mitchell Team USA

Team USA lost to France at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, 89-78, on Wednesday, marking the first time since 2006 that USA basketball has lost in worldwide competition.

It's the first tournament loss for Team USA since the 2006 World Championships, snapping a streak of 58 straight wins with National Basketball Association players representing the country in global play.

There will be a new FIBA World Cup champion, as Team USA had won the previous two tournaments.

France led 45-39 at intermission but the USA stormed ahead 66-63 after three quarters led by Mitchell.

He had 14 points in the third quarter, and his dunk with 2:40 left pulled the USA into a 60-60 tie.

Rudy Gobert (21 PTS & 16 REB) and France upset Team USA 89-79 to advance to the @FIBAWC semi-finals! As the Americans struggled to create inside, they had to kick the ball out for threes.

Syria: Turkey, US Hold Joint Ground Patrol in Northern Syrian 'Safe Zone'
The ministry claimed far more discussions would be held Wednesday at a joint operations centre near Turkey's border with Syria . Activities for the formation of a safe zone in the northern Syria and east of the Euphrates are ongoing, the ministry added.

What eventually worked for the Americans was their aggressiveness on defense in the third quarter. The Americans had more space on offense in the halfcourt because of the quicker pace. Marcus Smart made three free throws after getting fouled by Gobert to put the United States back on top, and the Americans took a 66-63 lead into the fourth. The Americans gave up a seven-point fourth quarter lead, and it wasn't hard to see why. France never trailed again. Eastern and the Czechs play Poland (4-2) at 9 a.m. Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner, who had played well during the tournament, struggled as well.

Curiously, Mitchell only got three shots up in the final carom despite the fact that he was rolling, which has got to be considered a failure on the part of Team USA.

"It doesn't mean anything if you don't win in the end", Gobert said. Walker is one of the NBA's leading pick-and-roll players, but neither he nor the rest of Team USA could put Gobert on skates a la Steph Curry.

Perhaps next time around, more American players will want to show out for their country, especially after the embarrassment of not even winning a medal. Perhaps a more formidable US squad could attack Gobert and the French defense, especially one armed with either elite isolation scorers (hello, James Harden) or athletic marvels like Anthony Davis. After returning to the game with 8:11 remaining, Mitchell got only two shots while the game still was in question.

"Just got to take it like a man at this point", U.S guard Kemba Walker said.

Japan gained an automatic berth as hosts and four other nations will complete the 12-team field after next year's qualifying tournaments.
