Williams falls short of grand slam record

Canada toasts'Queen B Andreescu after major triumph

Serena Williams used a strong performance to return to the U.S. Open final and give herself another shot at winning a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title.

"If anyone else could win the US Open - except for Venus - I'm glad it's Bianca", she said with a laugh, referring to her older sister who had cheered her on from the players' box, which also included Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex.

"I'm sure I'm not the only person that's looked up to her". I have to do better.

"I was just thinking, honestly at that point, wow, this is bad", said Williams.

"Bianca played an unbelievable match". But yeah, I've really strived to be like her. Ever since then, I've been picturing myself holding that trophy.

Williams had 33 winners but just as many unforced errors.

"I wanted to win the first point to show her that I am in it to win it".

"But (on Saturday night) it was the youngster who played the big points better".

"Like I said after I won the Orange Bowl (in 2015), a couple months after, I really believed that I could be at this stage".

Williams, who turns 38 later this month, was gracious in defeat. I think we fight really, really hard. She became the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam finals. Impressed by her rival's sportsmanship after the match, Williams called Andreescu an "old soul".

Federal election campaign to kick off on Wednesday
There were eight independents - including former Liberal cabinet ministers Jane Philpott and Jody Wilson-Raybould. Scheer, the head of the conservative party, said today that Trudeau had lost the moral authority to govern.

All of it honestly, truly is super frustrating.

In her match against Williams, the 19-year-old was ruthless as she pounced on every second serve of the American and dominated the game from the start.

"I don't know what to say".

"I'm not necessarily chasing a record". She has now won 14 straight matches and an extraordinary 45 of her 49 matches this season. "I told myself to put the goddamn ball inside the court and just breathe as much as I could". "I'm still doing what I can do".

Starting on fire in the opening set, Andreescu overcame serious challenge from Williams in the second set before notching up the 6-3, 7-5 triumph in one hour and 40 minutes.

"Since then, honestly I've been visualising it nearly every single day. I'm just trying to win Grand Slams", Williams said.

Following the loss, a humbled Williams praised her opponent saying, "Bianca played an unbelievable match". "In the final, playing Serena". She's done that many, many times throughout her career.

"I'm not really happy, but I have to take it one moment at a time", she said.

I honestly didn't play my best today. But I guess that's what makes this tournament so special. but it definitely wasn't easy, especially when she started coming back in the second set. That's the only solace that I can take right now.
