Rory McIlroy was stunned by his PGA Player of the Year win

Rory Mc Ilroy of Northern Ireland lines up a putt during the final round the final round of the European Masters golf tournament in Crans-Montana Switzerland Sunday

In a vote of the players, who presumably gave as much weight to the whole season as the four biggest weeks, McIlroy won the Jack Nicklaus Award over Brooks Koepka.

It is the third time in his career that the Northern Ireland golfer has won the award, which is voted for by the tour's membership.

"I'm at a loss for words", McIlroy said Wednesday.

McIlroy looked at it and said, "I've already got two of those", he said.

That's what the players on the PGA Tour said by voting Rory McIlroy the victor of the Jack Nicklaus award as 2018-19 Player of the Year.

McIlroy had three victories among his tour-best 14 finishes in the top 10, including The Players Championship. "Yeah, very. somewhat surprised, but honored that my fellow players thought enough of my year to award me this honor again". PGA Tour members who played at least 15 official events were eligible to vote before the September 6 deadline.

He won three times, same as McIlroy, led the FedEx Cup in the regular season and won the money title by almost $2 million over McIlroy. He finished tied for second at the Masters in April, won the PGA Championship for the second straight year at Bethpage Black in May, finished solo second at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in June and tied for fourth at the Open Championship in July.

Kim Clijsters announces shock return to WTA Tour after seven years away
The WTA said Clijsters can receive unlimited wildcards for its tournaments being that she's a former top-ranked player. Clijsters became the first mother to win a Grand Slam title since Evonne Goolagong at Wimbledon in 1980.

The world rankings heading into this week's tournaments are led by Koepka, McIlroy, Dustin Johnson (USA), Justin Rose (England) and Justin Thomas (USA). "I will definitely make the trip back over for that event". I've harped on this a little bit over the course of the year: I think players don't just feel four weeks a year are important, it's more than that. It's more than that. Not knowing the vote total or even how many players opened the email from headquarters leads to inevitable and unfortunate questions.

Another thing McIlroy's win might tell us is that tour players value week-to-week results much more than golf fans or media do. His 21st and final PGA Tour victory came in Greensboro's Wyndham Championship in Greensboro in 2015, his third win at that tournament over a 23-year span.

But McIlroy wasn't almost as good as Koepka in majors.

For world No. 10 Bryson DeChambeau, the highest-ranked player in the field, the event is an opportunity to follow Woods's instructions to his President's Cup players to keep sharp in the buildup to the event.

Majors have become the strongest gauge in golf, mostly because of the 18 won by Nicklaus that set the standard of greatness in the sport.

Last month, Koepka was named PGA of America Player of the Year based on points.
