UP among world's top 500 universities

Cambridge University ranked third

India has jumped significantly in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020, with 56 institutions making it to the list, up from 49 previously. Elsewhere in the top ten are Stanford, Yale, MIT and Harvard, as well as Imperial College London. However, the Bengaluru-based institute still ranks highest among all others in India and shares its position with IIT-Ropar in the THE list.

There are a total of five categories that schools are scored on which are teaching, research, citations, industry income, and worldwide outlook. Rankings are done across 13 performance indicators grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income, reputation), citations (research influence), global outlook (staff, students and research) and industry outcome (knowledge transfer). Times Higher Education, which considers nearly 1,400 universities across 92 countries, stands as the largest and most diverse higher education ranking to date.

"As a university, we continue to view university rankings with caution".

Overall, the University of Toronto has a score of 85.5 out of 100. The only university in the top 20 that isn't in Canada, the US or the United Kingdom is in Switzerland. "It is fabulous to see UNBC increase its score in every category Times Higher Education uses to measure elite global universities".

McGill is ranked at spot number 42 and then there's a gap between it and the next Canadian school, McMaster University, which is only at 72.
