Hua, Sian - Huawei Mate 30 Loses Access To Google Apps Again

Qualcomm Resumes Business with Huawei Following Exemption from US Govt

Huawei told Bloomberg that it had no involvement with the LZPlay app.

Users then followed the in app instructions, and could then download Google apps onto their devices. That sounds great in theory, but in practice, any Mate 30 Pro buyer from the United States (if you can get it) and Europe wants Google apps preinstalled, particularly the Play store, Google Maps, and YouTube.

For Google's apps and services to run correctly on a phone, they need to be installed in the system partition, which is protected on all new phones.

While we've known for months that the Mate 30 series and other future Huawei devices will be officially blocked from using Google's own Android apps and services, it quickly became apparent once pre-release units became available recently that there was a way around the USA -government-mandated block.

However, this method comes with a risk, according to developer John Wu because it relies on Huawei's undocumented MDM API so the workaround is no longer an option. The upshot for anyone buying the new phones was that the devices would be running on a de-Googled version of Android. Although this "backdoor" requires user interaction to be enabled, the installer app, which is signed with a special certificate from Huawei, was granted privileges nowhere to be found on standard Android systems.

U.S. can slap tariffs on $7.5B of European Union goods, WTO rules
However, we believe that resorting to tariffs now would be short-sighted and counterproductive. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Rome on Wednesday, vowed to "defend our businesses".

In other words, LZPlay used two secret Huawei files that no one else outside Huawei seemed to know about, and which no other app seemed to use.

Since Wu published his findings, LZPlay has been taken down.

It seems then that unless the United States removes its ban on Huawei's access to the country's products and services, the Huawei Mate 30 range - and likely any future handsets - will have no access to much of what makes Android good, even for those who have the technical know-how to use workarounds. That's because Huawei has been on a USA trade blacklist since May, and isn't permitted to do business with Google. They don't pass any SafetyNet tests and that's going to prevent them from fully utilizing their devices. The process allowed the Mate 30 Pro (along with the basic Mate 30) to run popular apps like Google Maps and Gmail that otherwise would not be permitted. Only Google is able to make that kind of change through what's known as its SafetyNet anti-abuse check.

So, the Mate 30 Pro is in a rough spot.

Unless this situation significantly improves in the next few weeks or months before the Mate 30 series is released in Europe, there's no way we or anyone else will be recommending this phone to anyone beyond diehard Huawei fans.
