Unilever announces plans to reduce plastic use

Marmite maker Unilever announces plans to slash plastic usage

The company said that it intends to reduce its absolute use of plastic packaging by more than 100,000 tonnes and rapidly expand its use of recycled plastics so as to ensure it halves it use of virgin plastic.

Ellen MacArthur, former record-holder for the fastest solo circumnavigation of Earth and Founder of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, added: "Today's announcement by Unilever is a significant step in creating a circular economy for plastic".

His full statement read: "Plastic has its place, but that place is not in the environment".

Consumer products giant Unilever, whose brands include Dove soaps and Lipton teas, said Monday it aims to halve its use of non-recycled plastics by 2025. Procter & Gamble for instance announced in April to curb the amount of plastic use by 2030.

Unilever being one of the largest food producers in the United Kingdom, also made significant market contribution through dozens of beauty, health and cleaning brand products.

Unilever said the promises make it the "first major global consumer business to commit to an absolute reduction" in the use of plastics across its production.

The move comes as multinational firms face growing pressure to cut the use of plastics which are polluting both land and sea.

"No Status Quo On Construction" Says Lawyer After Top Court's Aarey Order
The state government had told the court on 20 September that Aarey can not be declared a forest just because of its greenery. To this, the top court said that Aarey forest was a no development zone and not eco-sensitive zone as claimed by petitioner.

Jope added: "Our plastic is our responsibility and so we are committed to collecting back more than we sell, as part of our drive towards a circular economy". "We encourage Unilever to prioritize its efforts upstream by redesigning single-use plastic and packaging out of its business model". "Eight million tonnes of plastic are dumped into our seas every year killing our precious wildlife, from local beaches to the frozen Arctic". This will be delivered through investment and partnerships that improve waste management infrastructure in numerous countries in which it operates.

Jope indicated that design will be a key element to how it reduces plastic going forward.

Since then, the company has introduced shampoo bars, refillable toothpaste tablets, cardboard deodorant sticks, and bamboo toothbrushes.

Since 2017, Unilever has been working on new ways of packaging and delivering its products, including concentrates and refill stations for shampoo and laundry detergent in shops, universities and mobile vending in south east Asia.

Unilever said the new goals build on existing packaging targets that it is already on track to meet, including its pledges to all its plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025, and that it uses at least 25 per cent recycled plastic in its packaging by the same date. It has also introduced detectable pigment in its black plastics for brands including Aex and TRESemme.

In India, where it operates through Hindustan Unilever Ltd, the company has over the last five years collaborated with many partners to collect, and recycle plastic packaging.
