Kaelin, Jr. of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe of Oxford University and the Francis Crick Institute, and Gregg L. Semenza of Johns Hopkins University have won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.

Oxygen is used by cells to release the energy trapped in food in a reaction known as aerobic respiration. So the body has developed molecular "machinery" that helps regulate oxygen when environmental levels are too low or too high.

The Swedish Academy said their "elegant" findings were leading to treatments for anaemia and even cancer.

More than 4,000 exoplanets have since been found in the Milky Way since then, and "Strange new worlds are still being discovered, with an incredible wealth of sizes, forms and orbits", the committee said.

The Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded a day after three researchers from the United States and Britain shared the Nobel Medicine Prize for discoveries on how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.

Johnson added, "Scientists often toss around this phrase 'textbook discovery.' But I'd say this is really a textbook discovery". After Marie Curie in 1903 and German-American scientist Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963, Strickland became just the third woman to be awarded the Physics Prize since 1901.

Police make arrests after day of climate protests in Wellington
Such a scene played out in cities around the world throughout Monday, although some saw more dramatic efforts. The activists have reportedly planned to sit-in for most of the morning.

Semenza said it is likely one or more of these drugs will be approved in the next few years.

"When I started working in this subject - I can tell you the date, 1964 - at the invitation of my mentor, Professor Robert Henry Dicke, I was very uneasy about going into this subject because the experimental observational basis was so modest. She set me on a course to science". "You should enter science because you are fascinated by it", The Canadian Press reports.

The University of Geneva quoted Mayor and Queloz as saying it was "simply extraordinary" that they won the prize for "the most exciting" discovery of their careers. The prize ceremony will take place on December 10, on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.

Peebles thanked the Nobel committee for the award but said his advice to young people wanting to go into science would be not to be lured by the prospect of such prizes.

The Nobel Prize is announcing its winners for 2019 this week, and all eyes are on Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenage climate change activist widely seen as the frontrunner for the Peace Prize.

On Thursday, the Swedish Academy will announce one literature laureate for 2018 and one for 2019, after postponing last year's award due to a sexual harassment scandal that exposed deep rifts among its 18 members.
