Arrests as Extinction Rebellion protests go global

We have tried petitions lobbying and marches and now time is running out. Extinction Rebellion protesters in Melbourne Australia

Extinction Rebellion activists held an "opening ceremony" at Marble Arch ahead of planned protests across London.

Meanwhile, Dutch police said they had detained about 90 demonstrators who were blocking a busy Amsterdam street Monday as part of a climate protest by the Extinction Rebellion group.

Groups of demonstrators shut down roads around Parliament and Whitehall on Monday, with vehicles and bikes, and banners reading "tell the truth" and "No coal mines, no fracking".

An "opening ceremony" on Sunday evening attracted hundreds of people to central London, where plans are in place to shut down key sites - including Westminster and Lambeth bridges - in addition to protests outside key government departments.

Demonstrators playing steel drums marched through central London on Monday as they kicked off two weeks of activities created to disrupt the city. "There have been about 10 arrests so far, although nobody from Norwich or Norfolk yet".

Police say they arrested some of the protesters on the road outside the Rijksmuseum, one of the city's most popular tourist draws. After that, police officers put real effort into ending the demonstration.

"They said there was some risk that I would be egged", he added. It's a last resort. People have tried marches, signing petitions for the past 30 years and it has had no effect.

By the end of the day, around 390 protesters were moved to other, out-of-the-way areas of the city, where they could continue their protest.

Jonjo Evans, a member of Extinction Rebellion from Oswestry, was one of those joining the action and he said he felt it is the only was to force movement over changes to climate change policy.

"Our daily lives involve learning about climate change and whether we actually have a way of fixing it", said University of Victoria geography student Taryn Bishop.

"Until it is (front page news), we'll have to keep disrupting the agenda with creative actions targeting the major institutions standing in the way of rapid change", he said. This starts to get very personal.

But former Tory MP Nick Boles - who quit the party over its stance on Brexit - hit out at the Prime Minister over the comments, branding him "Britain Trump".

Although rain Monday likely hampered turnout, Huang said he thinks the number of people that did come out in the damp weather is a "testament to how passionate people are".
