Cosmology trio win Nobel Physics Prize

Nobel Prize for medicine is awarded to two Americans and a British scientist

Physics is the second Nobel to be awarded this week; William Kaelin, Gregg Semenza and Peter Ratcliffe shared the medicine prize on Monday for discoveries about how cells respond to oxygen levels.

Goran Hansson, secretary general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, said the TV show was a "fantastic achievement" that brought the "world of science to laptops and living rooms around the world".

Kaelin said it would be a lie to say he had never dreamt of winning the prize, but "you try not to let it distort your daily life significantly", and he went to bed at a normal time Sunday night, tempering his hopes, as he had done for many years on the eve of Nobel week.

Peebles' work is a deeply theoretical look back in time and space at how the universe came to its current form, mostly filled with dark matter and dark energy we can't even see. "It's great that the research on a very rare disorder such as von Hippel-Lindau disease was instrumental in providing the insights into something as fundamental as oxygen sensing. the observations that they've made are wonderful", he says.

"If you think of the main causes of death in the U.S., three out of five are related to lack of oxygen", including heart attack, stroke and respiratory diseases, said Isha Jain, a scientist at the University of California at San Francisco who was partially inspired to enter the field by the work being honored by the Nobel.

Dr. Peebles, 84, is a professor emeritus at Princeton University, where he is known for pioneering theoretical work discerning the origin and nature of the cosmos since the 1960s.

"Here I am as a cancer biologist helping to contribute to a new drug for hematological condition, namely anemia", he said, adding he hoped to use his voice to advocate for sufficient funding for such science.

At a news conference in London, Queloz said the focus of research had now shifted from finding more planets to finding out more about them - about their atmosphere, chemistry and formation. While the discovery of exoplanets would have happened regardless of Mayor and Queloz-competing groups published results within a few years of their 1995 paper-they had the right hardware and planet to compel the astronomy community to accept the results. Since their discovery, thousands of other exoplanets have been found.

An exoplanet is a planet outside the solar system. Professor at University of Geneva, Switzerland. "The seminal discoveries by this year's Nobel Laureates revealed the mechanism for one of life's most essential adaptive processes".

They will receive their prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of scientist Alfred Nobel who created the prizes in his last will and testament.

The Nobel Prize, first awarded in 1901, is widely considered the highest honor in science, economics, and literature.

Nobel, a Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite, decided the physics, chemistry, medicine and literature prizes should be awarded in Stockholm, and the peace prize in Oslo.

Peebles is the second Canadian in a row to win the physics prize.

On Friday the action moves to Norway where the Peace Prize is awarded, with bookies such as Ladbrokes backing Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg.
