Explosion in Huntington Beach

Staff at the Old World German restaurant on Center Avenue noticed an odor coming from the underground electrical vault.

"It was just like one giant fireball that went up", she informed the Lengthy Seaside Press Telegram. During a news conference Sunday morning, Lopez said authorities learned about the fifth person, also a civilian, overnight.

The newspaper says the initial blast blew a vault door off its latch.

The cause is under investigation.

Sunday's Oktoberfest events are canceled.

Investigators are working with the Southern California Edison power company to investigate the cause of the explosion and whether gas had anything to do with it because some patrons had reported smells of gas, Lopez said.

The Oktoberfest in Huntington Beach today was promised to be a lot of fun for the family and has been a popular event among visitors and Californians.

The Press-Telegram reports that the source of the explosions may have been an electrical transformer but this has yet to be confirmed by authorities. As many as 1,700 customers lost electricity, he said.

The first blast blew a vault door off its hinges and knocked several people to the ground after firefighters responded to reports of a possible electrical fire Saturday evening at Old World Village in Huntington Beach, witnesses and officials said.

Witnesses at the scene claimed there were actually three explosions.

Local fire department Battalion Chief Jeff Lopez confirmed that two firefighters and two restaurant workers received treatment for minor injuries, while another restaurant employee suffered moderate to severe injuries and required more extensive treatment. The complex had been hosting the Old World Oktoberfest festival, according to the Associated Press.
