Waldgeist scuppers Arc dream for Enable

Pierre-Charles Boudot riding Waldgeist came with a telling finish

Both Gosden and Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for Enable's owner Khalid Abdullah, declined to confirm the mare's anticipated immediate retirement.

He told Gambling Insider: "Clearly the Enable result was a thing for the industry and was very much needed after a bad Saturday at Ascot when five favorites won in a row".

Forced wide in the early stages, Enable - victor of the Yorkshire Oaks in August - hit the front in the home straight and appeared to have thoroughbred history within her grasp.

Pierre-Charles Boudot, 26, twice French champion jockey with over 300 winners in 2016, explained that Waldgeist only really started to engage with the race in the false straight.

However the John Gosden-trained mare began to tire on the testing going at the furlong marker as Waldgeist began to pick up strongly under the urging of Pierre-Charles Boudot.

"She ran an absolutely brilliant race", he told ITV Racing.

This time it was the Clarehaven challenge which faltered in the final stages as odds-on favourite Enable got the better of three-year-olds Sottsass and Japan only to succumb to the withering late challenge of Waldgeist.

"Frankie committed, and went for it, and just the last part, in the ground testing her, it's hard to show that explosive turn of foot - and Waldgeist has outstayed her on the ground". Full credit to Andre.

"The ground was very sticky", said Dettori after Enable had been cheered and applauded louder than the victor back into the spot reserved for the runner-up.

Coming into the Arc she was unbeaten in her previous 12 races - all under Dettori - and is widely expected to be retired with a record of 13 wins from 15 races.

Sri Lanka outclass Pakistan by 35 runs to claim T20 series
The two left-handers hit a pair of sixes and a boundary off leg-spinner Shadab Khan before both fell in the space of seven runs. Sri Lanka , meanwhile, will be aiming to seal the first T20I series after losing all four of their most recent T20I series.

"How can we complain?"

"We have to accept defeat in racing".

"We don't love her any less".

As for the horse's future - Enable followed up her second Arc past year by winning at the Breeders' Cup in America - he added no decision would be made "in a hurry".

Enable had beaten Waldgeist three times before the five-year-old - owned jointly by the German breeders Gestut Ammerland and Newsells Park Stud, in Hertfordshire - finally exacted his revenge.

"I'm very proud that Waldgeist managed to beat such a fantastic mare - it's well deserved", he said.

A few hours later at Wolverhampton, Betsey Trotter's length victory in the bet365 Fillies' Handicap was notable as the 1,000th success of trainer David O'Meara's career.

O'Meara, a former National Hunt jockey principally for Tim Easterby, first took out a licence to train in 2010 and made rapid progress.

Enable had previously won the Eclipse Stakes, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks this year.

It marks an eight Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe victor for French trainer André Fabre.
