Sesame Street to tackle addiction crisis

Sesame Street tackles addiction crisis

Now, the iconic children's television show having a muppet named Karli teach them about a more hard subject: the opioid crisis.

Now, the character of Karli, who was previously introduced as being in foster care, explains that her mother is in a group meeting for her addiction. Karli, who is a long-time friend of Elmo, has a mother battling addiction. The segment uses language that is easy to understand for Sesame Street's young demographic.

In the segment, Karli declares, "Hi, it's me, Karli. And she said that she loves me no matter what". I felt like I was the only one. "But now I've met other kids like Salia and we can talk about it together", Karli says while introducing a clip of Salia.

Salia explains that addiction is "getting attracted to something so you keep doing it over and over again".

"Yeah, a sickness that makes people feel like they have to take drugs or drink alcohol to feel OK", the Muppet said.

Salia shares what it has been like for her and her little sisters as their parents dealt with their addictions.

'My mom and dad told me that addiction is a sickness, ' Salia said. "I'm proud of Mom and Dad for asking for help and not using drugs and alcohol anymore". She will tell her backstory in online-only segments as part of the "Sesame Street in Communities" initiative, Sesame Workshop announced Wednesday.

Like in that case, reactions to Kube's interruption have been overwhelmingly positive. While Kube was momentarily distracted, she quickly returned to the topic at hand.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 130 people in the United States die every day from an opioid overdoes.

According to the Guardian, Sesame Street chose to add Karli's character on the basis that around 5.7 million children under the age of 11 live in a home with a parent with substance abuse issues. "Both of our parents have had the same problem - addiction".

'Right, we're not alone, ' Salia responded. Creators prefer "addiction" to "substance abuse" and "recovery" to "sobriety" because those terms are clearer to children.

In another segment, Karli told Elmo how she used to feel like her mother's addiction was her fault. America's opioid crisis has grown steadily worse in recent years.

Over the years, we've seen mainstays like Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Bert and Ernie as part of the Sesame Street family. "For everything we've done-from military families to homelessness-it's all about how to make children free to talk and to give parents the tools to do just that". Sesame Workshop is addressing the issue of addiction.

It's also a chance to model to adults a way to explain what they're going through to kids and to offer simple strategies to cope. They don't have to be isolated. "They need to understand that there are others out in the world who are going through the same thing, even characters on TV".
