American Airlines Cancels 737 MAX Flights Until Mid-January

American Boeing max 2020

The figures are the latest demonstration of the hit to the company's finances and prospects because of the MAX, which was taken out of service in mid-March following two deadly crashes that killed 346 people.

Aside from that, the grief-sickened United States planemaker, whose fleet of Max 737 was grounded worldwide since March this year amid growing upheaval over safety issues of Boeing Co.'s best-selling Max 737 jets, had reported a 50 per cent drop in deliveries over the first three quarters of 2019 on a year-on-year basis.

American Airlines removed the Boeing 737 Max 8 from its schedules through mid-January as it anticipates a continued delay of the troubled passenger jet returning to the skies, the airline said Wednesday. The airline added that it would slowly phase in the Max for commercial service and that "it will increase flying through the month and into February". Beginning October 13, American's Reservations and Sales team will contact affected customers who are impacted by any potential flight cancellations.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it doesn't have a firm date for completing its review.

The FAA last week told aircraft operators to inspect 165 Boeing 737 NG airliners for structural cracks within seven days after the issue was found on a small number of planes.

FAA failed to properly review 737 Max system
A report Friday by global aviation regulators criticized the US Federal Aviation Administration's certification of the MAX. United Airlines is latest and final US airline to push back service.

The FAA has been working with Boeing, worldwide authorities, the aviation industry and a team of technical experts to return the Boeing 737 MAX to service.

"I'm not going to certify this plane until I'm satisfied", he said.

Federal regulators have not yet set a date for certification flights, but in an interview with ABC News last month, the head of the FAA, Stephen Dickson, said that no USA commercial carrier will fly the Boeing 737 MAX until he is "completely assured" that it is safe to do so.

Ahead of its earnings release later this month, American said that despite the negative impact to revenue from Hurricane Dorian, it expects third quarter total revenue per available seat mile to increase about 1.5 to 2.5% year-over-year, adjusted from previous guidance of 1 to 3%.

Boeing is working to complete changes to the Max's flight-control software and computers.
