Most pregnant women aren't getting flu and whooping cough shots, CDC warns

Australia has just emerged from a flu season that started earlier than usual and was more severe than expected. John Mahoney Montreal Gazette

However one in three of these women did not get the shots, the survey found.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu vaccines can not cause flu illness. Peak influenza activity occurred during the week ending February 23, 2019. I'm sure we've all heard someone's specific reasoning for an excuse to avoid the flu shot.

Flu season is here, and if you're pregnant, one of the best ways to protect yourself and baby is to get a flu shot.

Even if you are healthy you can benefit from getting the flu shot and it is recommended every year.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is hoping to have 90 per cent of the "flu shot" supply available by the end of the month. The top reason for not getting vaccinated against influenza was the belief the vaccine wasn't effective.

Troubling statistics among pregnant women are making health officials anxious.

This year, there have already been reports of a few more flu-related deaths, including a 4-year-old from California. They will also offer flu shots at 9:00 a.m.to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. But it is never too late to get vaccinated even in January.

Mild side effects include soreness, redness and possible swelling from the shot.

What exactly does the flu shot do you may ask?

New data from the CDC suggest that a significant amount of pregnant women are not receiving an important pair of vaccines during their pregnancies, STAT reported.

Getting the shot also helps others.

"Although some vaccination programs may need to adjust their timing to accommodate a somewhat later than usual delivery of vaccine, health professionals at all levels of government are working together to minimize any potential impacts", wrote a spokesperson in an email.

Officials track which strains of flu spread throughout Australia, as well as how many people contract the flu and how the season ebbs and flows.

As such, USA health officials are concerned we could see an early flu season here, as well-and it's possible we're already seeing it.

Health professionals say the flu vaccine is your best bet to preventing hospitalization, or worse. Giant Food Stores, for example, announced flu vaccines are available throughout the coming months and that they are offering free health screenings from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at 25 locations, including 3015 W. Emmaus Ave., Allentown, and 859 Nazareth Pike, Nazareth.

Additionally, Adalja said tracking the flu is important for community organizers, educators or people who work at schools and event planners since certain events and gatherings may not be ideal during a bad outbreak in a community.

Take antiviral drugs to treat flu if prescribed by your doctor.
