Steam is bringing local multiplayer gaming to the online world

Steam's new

Remote Play Together would considerably expand this, as PC Gamer adds, "All local multiplayer, local co-op and split-screen games will be automatically included in the Remote Play Together beta".

The Remote Play Together feature was announced by Valve staffer Alden Kroll on Twitter. When the Friend accepts an invitation to play, it's as though they're playing side by side at the same machine. "It will soon be enjoyed among friends online using the Remote Play Together Beta, enabling fans to introduce your local multiplayer game to new audiences".

In other words, it looks like Steam will use streaming technology to simulate a couch co-op experience.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali awarded Nobel Peace Prize
But Ethiopia's reforms do not appear to have inspired any in Eritrea, which has since closed border posts with its neighbor. Predicting the victor is always a challenge since the Norwegian Nobel Committee never reveals the names of the nominees.

Some PC games include a local multiplayer option for groups of people who want to play together in the same location. Clearly there's a lot of games that could benefit from Remote Play Toegther. Local co-op hung on as a common feature for years after the internet became available, but as the quality of online matches improved, developers began to put less emphasis on local play (cooperative or competitive) as a whole. The feature then captures the second players' control inputs and pipes it back to the host PC. Remote Play usually doesn't have problems with high-latency gameplay, but it does require a decently powerful computer, and Valve recommends a wired connection for Remote Play.

The most convenient part - if you're like me and most of your gamer friends are only accessible via the internet - is that apparently only one of you needs to actually own the game.
