UAW workers march in Detroit as GM strike enters 26th day

GM appeals directly to UAW workers: 'The strike has been hard on you, your families ...'

General Motors Co took the unusual step of appealing directly to employees in a blog post on Friday that laid out the terms of its latest offer aimed at ending a month-long strike.

"The strike has been hard on you, your families, our communities, the company, our suppliers and dealers", GM's letter read, saying the latest offer increased compensation and promised a path to full-time jobs for temporary workers.

The messages mark a turning point for GM in the fourth week of a strike that's halted production at 34 USA plants and disrupted output in factories in Mexico and Canada.

It also promises billions of dollars worth of investment in US facilities, creating thousands of new jobs.

Negotiations between GM and the UAW, now in day 25, stalled over the weekend after GM rejected the union's latest contract proposal. The work stoppage has ground GM's vehicle production to a halt and forced almost 50,000 hourly workers to live on strike benefits $250 a week.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra has now involved herself in negotiations between the automaker and the United Auto Workers union.

"The pain is beginning to set in on both sides and they'll realize that sooner or later", Masters said in an interview.

"Dittes wrote: "The completion of those committees is not known at this point, but they have been meeting since our 3:30 p.m. meeting" on Wednesday". Workers and the union are pushing GM on a host of issues, including wages, health care and the use of temporary workers.

General Motors millwright Jessica Merz was at Friday's demonstration outside the company's Warren Technical Center.

On Sunday, the UAW said the talks took a "turn for the worse" and on Tuesday urged GM to boost U.S. vehicle production.

An analyst estimates that GM is losing $82 million per day, while workers are having to live on $250 per week in strike pay. The company said at the time that it would construct a new electric-vehicle battery factory in Lordstown and build an electric truck in its plant bordering Detroit and the town of Hamtramck. Manufacturing UAW workers in the United States start at $17 an hour and can earn $28 after eight years.

One of the remaining issues is critical and complex to solve: job security, said those close to the talks.

GM, however, contends that the ball is in the union's court, since they were the last ones to have made a formal offer, on Monday Oct. 7, according to a source close to the company.
