After the chain declared a drop in USA deals just as a 33 percent decrease in worldwide benefit in the principal quarter of that year, he vowed to all the more likely address todays customer needs, desires and the focused commercial center. On Sunday, he was promoted to CEO to succeed Stephen Easterbrook, who was sacked for having a consensual relationship with a worker.

Easterbrook is additionally eligible for medical and other transitional assistance benefits, according to McDonald's annual letter to shareholders, bringing his total severance plan package, as of the end of 2018, to $702,255 (R10 million).

"In consideration for (severance) benefits, Mr. Easterbrook has agreed to a release of claims in favour of the company, to cooperate with the company following his termination", McDonald's said in regulatory filing.

Mr Brian Dunn quit as chief executive of consumer electronics chain Best Buy in 2012 following the revelation of his "close personal relationship" with a 29-year-old female subordinate.

Mr Brian Krzanich, CEO of semiconductor giant Intel, stepped down a year ago for violating the firm's non-fraternisation policy.

The list goes on - and it is not limited to corporate boardrooms, or to men.

"The #MeToo movement has certainly furthered scrutiny of relationships in the workplace", Moore said.

"The CEO is the most powerful person in the organisation", Moore said.

There are questions about whether consent is truly possible when the power imbalance is especially great. "If not, [the subordinate] could easily say at some point that it was a violation of sexual harassment policy".

The SHRM study found that 45% employers with workplace romance policies forbid relationships between employees of significant rank differences, while 35% prohibited them between employees who report to the same supervisor.

A SHRM survey from January 2019 found that one-third of American adults have been in a romantic relationship with someone at work.

"Because so much of our waking time is spent at work, it's no surprise that romances develop in the workplace", Taylor said in a statement.

"It makes little sense to forbid them", Taylor said.

Some companies have what are known as "love contract", which require disclosing relationships to the company and agreeing to act appropriately. McDonald's has faced allegations in the past year of condoning sexual harassment in the workplace and retaliating against employees who spoke up about it.
