Tracking big changes with a couple cold fronts

Today's Forecast Q2 Weather: An arctic cold front in on the way to Billings Bob McGuire

We wake up Friday in the low 20°s. A cold front will arrive by Thursday and bring with it some rain showers. After that, winds from the northwest will pick up on Thursday, generating lake-effect snow showers off of Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said the reason for the colder weather was due to "air coming down from the north-east". On Wednesday, temperatures will begin to warm slightly, with highs warming into the mid-20s to low 30s across the state. Those showers are expected to follow the jet stream into south-central Montana and northeastern Wyoming.

Overall, "A cold-weather regime will impact the Eastern two-thirds of the US the rest of this week through much of next week with below normal temperatures". Another cold start on Monday, then further rain.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy and mild with lows in the upper 60s to low 70s. One cold front that came through last night and introduced some cooler temperatures. And, yes, that does mean much of the area will see accumulating snow! Temperatures are starting in the upper 30s to middle 40s.

The winds will kick up heading into Friday. Winds will be north-northwest at 6-12 miles per hour. Regardless we will have clear skies and light to calm winds so wind chills won't be a factor (although we'll have to watch for winds to pick up shortly after sunrise even just at 5 miles per hour, that may be enough to produce single digit wind chills). The winds are light to calm, and they stay that way the rest of the day.

High temperatures clip 50 degrees today with a few rain/snow showers this morning and late today, mainly up to the north and west.

CHILLY WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday brings more sunshine, but it does little to warm the region. I had been expecting only an increase in cloud cover, but now there's enough consensus to suggest a few light showers are possible.

During the day Friday, snow will pivot northward through northern New England and into Canada as the storm tracks into Atlantic Canada.
