How Skoda Octavia Beat Volkswagen Golf at Its Own Game

The Skoda Octavia is one of the most successful nameplates for the automaker and the auto has just entered its fourth generation (since the nameplate's resurrection in 1996) making its global debut at a special event in Prague, Czech Republic. The generation sedan measures 4689 mm in length making it 19 mm longer, while the width is 1829 mm, 15 mm wider than the outgoing model. All of which means there's more space on the inside. The boot space is bigger too having 600-litre of capacity.

The vehicle comes with a cascading grille housed in a chrome frame, a coupe-inspired roof design, and chrome elements surrounding the windows.

The Octavia also gets a new line-up of engines. In profile, the roofline now drops sharply giving the Czech sedan a very coupe-ish stance. With its changing headlamp and grille design, the fourth generation Octavia, which is very similar to the Superb model, offers three different colors: Crystal Black, Lava Blue and Titanium Blue. The new Octavia is noticeably longer and the liftback design at the rear continues to make a highly likeable model in the segment. Skoda has also introduced Chrome and Dynamic appearance packages as options for the Ambition and Style trim levels.

Elsewhere, the steering wheel is now of a two-spoke design (a three-spoke sports version is available), and the multifunction controls now feature knurled knobs. Under the screen sits the air vents and a series of one-touch controls, with most of the buttons and switches having migrated to the screen. It comes with wireless charging, e-SIM connected tech, 3-zone climate control, USB-C connections, predictive cruise control, predictive pedestrian and cyclist protection, and so on.

The 2020 Octavia gets a host of safety assistance systems such as lane assist, collision avoidance assist, traffic jam assist and turn assist.

Though Skoda will offer the Octavia as a sedan and as an estate in the global markets, it is unlikely that the latter will make it to India.

The Octavia for India will likely be a petrol-only model, offered with the option of 150hp, 1.5-litre and 190hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines. Both can be had in mild-hybrid form, with near-identical performance but with claimed efficiency gains. Transmission options will include the 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG. The 2.0-litre diesel is offered in three states of tune. It can be had with DSG gearbox, all-wheel drive but no hybrid tech. All of these are paired with a seven-speed DSG, the 1.0 litre and 1,5-litre units also get 48V mild-hybrid tech which allows them to coast, recover energy lost in braking and provide a slight torque boost.

The European version ships in the following versions: 1.0 TSI @ 110 hp / 82 kW; 1.5 TSI @ 150 hp / 112 kW; 2.0 TSI @ 190 hp / 142 kW; 2.0 TDI @ 115 hp / 86 kW; 2.0 TDI @ 150 hp / 112 kW; 2.0 TDI @ 200 hp / 150 kW; G-Tec CNG engine @ 150 hp / 112 kW.
