London Bridge Attack: Several Injured After Stabbing Incident, One Suspect Detained

British police shot a man on Friday after a stabbing in the London Bridge area in the centre of the city, a security source told Reuters.

The area around the famous landmark in the United Kingdom capital has been closed off following an incident which occurred on Friday afternoon. "I didn't really assume it was gunshots at first".

The BBC reported that two members of the public were killed in what police have called a terrorist attack.

Footage by one Twitter user, AmandaHunter87, filmed from a bus on the southbound carriageway, appeared to show two armed officers pointing guns towards a man on the ground.

Six people died, including the assailant and the policeman he stabbed, and at least 20 were injured in what police called a "marauding terrorist attack".

A police spokesman said earlier that it appeared that somebody had been shot.

The London Ambulance Service declared it a "major incident" after a number of people were injured.

One man was being detained.

They said a man was detained and "a number of people have been injured". "We will release facts when we can-our info must be accurate". "And then when we saw police coming to the bridge and closing it off, we were asked to move to the back of the restaurant, obviously away from the windows." she added. A terror attack on the bridge in 2017 killed several people.

This is a developing story and will be updated as we receive further information.

Fox has just reported that police confirm "multiple" people were stabbed in the incident.

Offices around the bridge are on lockdown and London Bridge station is closed, while trains and the Tube are not stopping, British Transport Police said.

Officers have not commented further on the motive for the attack near London Bridge, but Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu told a press conference on Friday afternoon that they were enhancing patrols in the area and across the city in response.

The three attackers were shot dead by police.

An armed police officer then dragged another person away from the man on the floor.

"For me they represent the very best of our country and I thank them on behalf of all of our country", he says.

A police helicopter could be seen overhead, as tourists and workers frantically phoned loved ones to tell them that they were safe.

The UK had earlier this month downgraded its terror threat level from "severe" to "substantial", which means a terrorist threat is likely rather than highly likely in the country.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was being kept abreast of the situation and expressed his gratitude for the work of the emergency services.
