Lyon bags five as Australia close in on 2-0

Ricky Ponting

Spin king Nathan Lyon snared five wickets, including risky half-century makers Shan Masood and Asad Shafiq, as Australia wore down a stubborn Pakistan to clinch the second Test and wrap up the series 2-0 Monday.

The situation could have been even worse for the tourists had Marnus Labuschagne not put down his third catch of the match when he grassed a tough chance at short leg after Lyon induced a nick from wicketkeeper Rizwan.

Denied a wicket despite some good spells in Pakistan's first innings 302, Lyon smashed through their defences on a docile pitch, removing Shaan Masood and Asad Shafiq before tea after both scored defiant half-centuries.

Shaheen Afridi became his fifth, caught at mid-off by Hazlewood on the last ball before dinner, with Australia on the cusp of inflicting another heavy loss on Pakistan after their innings and five runs defeat in the first of the two-Test series at Brisbane.

Look back at how day four at Adelaide Oval unfolded in our live blog below.

The visitors resumed on an overcast day teetering at 96-6 in reply to Australia's first innings of 589-3 declared, built on the back of David Warner's monumental 335 not out.

With the help of Azam and Shah's innings, Pakistan finished their first innings at 302 runs.

Hazlewood trapped opener Imam-ul-Haq lbw for a duck on the cusp of dinner and later returned to have Babar Azam caught behind for eight.

China sanctions U.S. over Hong Kong unrest
Protests over the last six months have drawn a wide swathe of Hong Kong society - from students to pensioners. She also said that Lam's government must prioritize "meaningful, inclusive" dialogue to resolve the crisis.

Although rain rescued Pakistan from further damage before the close, Australia will go into the final confident of taking the last seven wickets to seal a 2-0 series victory.

Australia won the first Test in Brisbane by an innings and five runs.

Australia were made to work hard for the remaining wickets on day three as Yasir Shah dug in for an unlikely century.

He batted superbly in partnerships with Azam and tailender Mohammad Abbas but was all nerves when on the brink of his hundred.

It says something about Pakistan's terrible tour of Australia that legspinner Yasir Shah has their best batting average and worst bowling average.

Starc's hat-trick ball caught the leading edge of Mohammad Abbas' bat but it flew away safely.

A fired-up Cummins ended Yasir and Abbas's fearless ninth wicket rearguard at 87 runs with a brute of a short ball that pinged off Abbas's glove and went to Warner at gully.

Australia's hopes of rattling through the tail were hurt by a sloppy day in the field.
