Alarming study shows hair dyes increase cancer risk

Permanent hair dye and straighteners may increase breast cancer risk

Other studies have also shown no increased risk of breast cancer due to the use of hair dye.

While researchers stress that more work needs to be done, these findings are important, especially given that Black women are more likely to die from breast cancer than white women.

A new study conducted by government scientists has found that women who use permanent hair dye and chemical straighteners may be at an increased risk of developing breast cancer than those who don't use such products.

Permanent dyes and chemical straighteners may increase the risk. The risks were the same for Black and white women but "straightener use was much more common among African American women".

"There is an increasing number of cases of breast cancer among women globally and in Ghana and we at Breast Care have increased awareness and education on preventive measures to reduce cancer deaths" she added. Participants completed an assessment on their health, demographics, and lifestyle, which included the use of hair products (in the past 12 months) at enrollment and provided researchers with updates over the course of eight years.

The study included data from 46,709 women in the US and Puerto Rico who were part of the Sister Study - women who had no history of breast cancer but had at least one sister diagnosed with breast cancer.

There was little to no increase in breast cancer risk among women who used semi-permanent or temporary hair dyes, however.

Previous research with animals has found links between chemicals in hair dye and straighteners and cancer. But here's the thing: African-American women are more likely to relax their hair (74 percent compared to 8 percent of white women).

Should women stop using these products? .

The risk was notably higher among black women. Also, Black women are more often found to have triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive type that frequently returns after treatment.

"I am so sad that my youthful ombre may be at risk, as a woman of a certain age who regularly colors her hair", Police said. Many women interviewed in the study might also not accurately recall frequency of use, or whether they used permanent or semi-permanent dyes, Cassell reasoned.

Erin Nau, a licensed clinical social worker with the Adelphi Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline, says it can't be determined what exactly causes cancer.
