Parnas and Fruman, the defendants, made additional contributions to federal candidates, joint fundraising committees, and independent expenditure committees that either (i) were intentionally funneled through, and made in the name of, a limited liability corporation to hide that Parnas and Fruman were the true source of contributions and skirt the federal reporting requirements; or (ii) were reported in Parnas's name but were funded by Fruman, which allowed Fruman to exceed limits on contributions to candidates or committees to whom he had previously contributed.

New charges are likely in a criminal campaign finance case against Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, two associates of U.S. President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, a federal prosecutor said on Monday. According to prosecutors, they illegally funneled foreign money into USA political campaigns, including a $325,000 contribution to the pro-Trump America First political action committee.

Kukushkin and Correia are also charged in the case and are expected to appear at Monday's hearing.

"We think a superseding indictment is likely, but no decision has been made", Zolkind told US District Judge J. Paul Oetken, who is presiding over the case.

Both men have pleaded not guilty. It was stated by a federal prosecutor on Monday, Reuters reports.

US Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat who is chairman of the committee, has said he was in discussions with lawyers for Parnas about testifying. As an example, he held aloft a search warrant affidavit with the pages completely blacked out.

Zolkind responded by saying "the redactions don't relate to the charged case", and noted the investigation was ongoing.

The defendants are "under investigation for additional crimes", Zolkind said.

One of those companies is Ballard Partners, a Florida-based lobbying firm that reportedly made large payments to Parnas. The legal team Firtash hired to defend him in that case included Parnas as a translator.

Parnas and Fruman are also accused of acting as fixers for Giuliani as he attempted to dig up dirt on Trump rival and 2020 Democratic contender Joe Biden - and of helping to expedite the ouster of former USA ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch.

US law forbids politicians from taking foreign donations. Trump recalled her from her post earlier this year.

Zolkind said evidence being turned over to defense attorneys includes thousands of files, much of it phone, bank and internet records. The FBI is still trying to access those devices and evidence gleaned from them has not yet been produced. That's the office that just served the subpoenas. But, the lawyer said, Parnas was unable to answer at least part of the subpoena because he was missing "the lion's share" of the information "through no fault of his own".
