US Stock Market Overview - Stocks Slide on US-China Trade Concerns

US President Donald Trump said a deal with China would only happen if he wanted it to and he thought he was doing very well in the talks

"The China trade deal is dependent on one thing: do I want to make it", Trump told reporters.

Investors have been hoping that the United States and China can avert an escalation of their trade tensions which have slowed global economic growth.

Negotiators have continued to work on the trade deal.

The two sides, according to the Bloomberg report, are still in talks over the number of tariffs that will be rolled back as part of an agreement.

Oil, which had slipped on Tuesday, steadied overnight amid reports that Opec members will argue for more production cuts at their meeting in Vienna this week in order to bolster prices.

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told CNBC on Tuesday that staff-level trade negotiations with China were continuing but no high-level trade talks had been scheduled.

Trump has readied an additional 15 percent tariff on about $156 billion of Chinese goods set for December 15, but there is little sign that the "phase one" deal announced in October will take place beforehand.

"In some ways, I like the idea of waiting until after the election for the China deal, but they want to make a deal now and we'll see whether the deal's gonna be right - it's gotta be right", Trump told reporters in London, where he was attending a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, adding that he has "no deadline" to complete an agreement.

Australia repeals law allowing onshore medical care for refugees
He described the legislation as a law created to provide a "backdoor" to Australia, which was now closed. "Someone's lying here. Senior government frontbencher Simon Birmingham said Labor's claims were "completely misleading" and "complete over reach".

Ross's comments came hours after Trump said that he had "no deadline" on the trade deal. She did not elaborate on the measures. Further noting that the tensions stirred up by the Hong Kong and Xinjiang bills are unlikely to impact the talks.

Another Chinese official, who also declined to be identified, said it may take a very long time for Washington and Beijing to reach a deal if they can not find a way to strike a deal while "the iron is hot". The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday that would impose sanctions on Chinese officials over human-rights abuses against Muslim minorities, prompting Beijing to threaten possible retaliation.

Beijing called the Bill a malicious attack on China, demanded that the U.S. prevent it from becoming law and said it would act to defend its interests as necessary.

Vice Foreign Minister Qin Gang made "stern representations" to William Klein, the U.S. embassy's minister counselor for political affairs, and urged the USA to stop interfering in China's domestic affairs, state TV reported.

"I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi, China, and the people of Hong Kong", Trump said in a statement.

On Monday, the Chinese regime said they would suspend U.S. Navy visits to the port of Hong Kong. A report from Chinese state media earlier had indicated the government would soon publish a list of "unreliable entities" if the Xinjiang bill passes that could lead to sanctions against US companies.

It said China was expediting the process for the list because the US House bill would "harm Chinese firms' interests", and that "relevant" US entities would be among the targets.
