Trump impeachment to go ahead - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivers a statement about the impeachment inquiry on Capitol Hill Thursday

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday said she has instructed the House Judiciary Committee to draft articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump over his effort to pressure Ukraine to investigate a political rival.

The founders of the United States feared presidents abusing their powers, so they included in the constitution a process for removing one from office.

"The president leaves us no choice but to act", she said.

Following the press conference, Trump tweeted that Pelosi "just had a nervous fit".

With a majority of the Democratic-controlled chamber already expressing intent to back the divisive procedure, Trump is likely to become just the third president in USA history to be impeached by the House of Representatives.

Echoing a frequent Republican argument, he said that the "important and seldom-used act of Impeachment will be used routinely to attack future Presidents".

In the context of Trump, Democrats first pursued a two-month inquiry, led by the House Intelligence Committee, which submitted a 300-page report about its findings earlier this week. For Richard Nixon in 1974, the Judiciary Committee drew up five articles of impeachment and approved three of them.

The House Judiciary Committee has announced it will hold a hearing on Monday that will include presentations on the evidence form the impeachment inquiry.

"Democrats' sham impeachment is a blatant, purely partisan attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election" because they can not defeat him at the polls, the statement noted.

A photograph of Pelosi leaving the White House after that meeting - in sunglasses and a rust-colored coat - quickly went viral.

Rahul and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant , who would view this series as another precious chance to impress the powers that be. However, King only managed 17 runs in three T20 innings against the Afghans, proving it's not an easy transition.

But Pelosi's staff quickly posted it on her social media accounts, regarding it as a powerful image of the speaker standing up to a petulant president.

Polls have shown US voters are also largely divided along party lines over impeachment.

The announcement means it is all but certain that Mr Trump will be impeached, given the Democrats have a clear majority in the House of Representatives.

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy tweeted, "Pelosi and the Democrats are clearly are blinded by their hate for the President". "I am asking our chairman to proceed with articles of impeachment", she added in her televised statement, referring to Mr Jerrold Nadler.

Impeachment is the process by which the lower house of Congress brings charges against a USA president.

A Senate vote requires a two-thirds majority to convict and remove the president - unlikely in this case, given that Mr Trump's party controls the chamber.

The Senate now has 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents who usually vote with the Democrats.

Robert Trump was arriving at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday night when a cameraman quizzed him about how his elder brother is holding up as the impeachment saga unfolds.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham asked, "How many Democrats will join her [Pelosi] driving right off the cliff with this illegitimate impeachment hoax?" Since the last Yahoo News/YouGov poll, there has been a net swing of seven percentage points in favor of impeachment among Democrats; among Republicans, there has been a net swing of 11 points in the opposite direction.
